SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
FOR
Virtual Reality Deicer Simulator
(REV 1)
August 2024
FA462024QA325
Attach. 1: Salient Characteristics REV 1
Salient Characteristics For
Virtual Reality Deicer Simulator
Fairchild AFB, WA
1. BACKGROUND: Deicing aircraft is a crucial component of ensuring operational readiness in adverse weather conditions. After the aircraft has been deiced, the aircrew can conduct a pre-flight inspection to ensure it is in a suitable condition for flight, and only then can they proceed with take-off. The Virtual Reality (VR) deicer simulator offers technicians the chance to practice maintenance tasks on a virtual aircraft before working real world operations. This enables our Airmen to train throughout the year, develop consistent habits, and cultivate a disciplined approach to following the checklists required with these tasks. Additionally, it ensures that the unit can maintain a status of 100% mission ready. With this equipment, Airmen are no longer required to rely on the availability of a deice truck or wait for the onset of winter months to progress their training.
2. OBJECTIVES: The simulator will serve as a training tool to enhance the maintenance training capacity and reduce the workload by roughly 12 man-hours per aircraft. End goal is to reduce training time and equipment downtime as well as allow for increased training availability and proficiency ahead of winter operations for all Fairchild technicians assigned with deice responsibilities.
3. REQUIREMENTS: The contractor shall provide and install a VR platform specializing in single/multi-personnel KC-135 Deice, Anti-ice and AirPlus training. The provided VR Deicing Simulator shall be a complete standalone system which includes but is not limited to a CPU, monitor, external display, goggles, joystick, software, and peripheral accessories as required to ensure full functionality of system. VR Simulator shall simulate interior, functions, and controls of GL1800 Class A and GL2875 Class B deicers to include simulation of controls and closed bucket set-up. Contractor system shall include physical joysticks which are identical to internal manual controls of the deicer trucks. On-site installation, training and on-going tech support via email or phone during normal business hours is required for the duration of the manufacturer warranty
