About this file

This document is a Salient Characteristics specification for Track Ball Controllers dated April 2026. The requirement calls for delivery of three (3) tracking ball units that meet defined minimum performance and design specifications.

The track ball controllers must feature X and Y-axis force proportional functionality with USB interface utilizing HID communication protocol and a minimum 10-foot cable length. Units must be compatible with Microsoft Windows 10 and 11, support post-build firmware updates, and include comprehensive operation and service manuals with Windows drivers, configuration procedures, and firmware update guidance. The physical design must accommodate both desktop operation with an included base and easy removal for fixed-station installation without de-soldering or disconnecting the USB cable, utilizing only standard Phillips or Allen screws. The top hemisphere of the ball shall be approximately 3 inches in diameter, with dimensioned drawings provided for mounting holes, thread pitch, and mounting plate clearance requirements. Deliverables include comprehensive user manuals, interface documentation, required software and drivers, limited post-delivery integration support with user training, and one set of firmware code flash interface hardware for code re-flashing. Critical to the requirement is that the system must interface with the L3 Brashear digital control system, with proposals required to demonstrate either proven performance compatibility or technical capacity to modify software libraries to ensure full compatibility.
