DIVISION 9 - FINISHES

SECTION 09688

CARPETING GLUE-DOWN

1. GENERAL:

1.1 WORK INCLUDED:

1.1.1 Prepare surfaces to receive carpeting. Clean any foreign substance off existing floor after demolition and removal of existing carpet.

*1.1.2 Apply glue-down carpeting on floor surfaces where indicated, complete with required accessories.

1.1.3 Install edge strips where carpeting terminates at dissimilar floor finishes and where carpeting of different heights meet at doorways.

1.2 RELATED WORK:

1.2.1 Section 09260 - Gypsum Wallboard Systems.

1.3 REFERENCES:

1.3.1 ASTM Et648-203 - Critical Radiant Flux of Floor - Covering Systems Using a Radiant Heat Energy Source.

1.3.2 FS DDD-C-0095 - Carpet and Rugs, Wool, Nylon, Acrylic, Modacrylic, Polyester, Polypropylene.

1.4 SUBMITTALS:

*1.4.1 Submit samples and product data of carpet in accordance with Section 01300.

1.5 ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

1.5.1 Do not commence with carpet installation until painting and finishing work are complete and ceilings and overhead work, tested, approved, and completed.

1.5.2 Maintain room temperature at minimum 60 degrees F. for at least 24 hours prior to installation and relative humidity at approximately that at which the area is to be maintained.

1.5.3 Provide sufficient lighting.

2. PRODUCTS:

2.1 CARPET-TYPE I: Install in all rooms where room finish schedule calls for carpet.

2.1.1 Manufacturer: Monterey (by Tandus) or approved equal.

2.1.2 Style: Travertine.

2.1.3 Construction: Patterned Tipshear.

2.1.4 Pile Fiber: Solution/Space-dyed.

2.1.5 Finished Pile Height: .217 inch average.

2.1.6 Gauge: 5/64 inch.

2.1.7 Tufted Pile Weight: 32 ounces per square yard.

2.1.8 Stitches Per Inch: 13.2.

2.1.9 Primary Back: Woven polypropylene.

2.1.10 Static control: 3.5 kv.

2.1.11 Color: As selected from manufacturer's standards by

Contracting Officer.

2.1.12 Warranty: Manufacturer's limited lifetime warranty.

*2.2 ADHESIVE: Type recommended by carpet manufacturer to suit application and expected service.

3. EXECUTION:

3.1 PREPARATION:

3.1.1 Clean floors of dust, dirt, solvents, oil, grease, paint, plaster and other substances detrimental to proper performance of adhesive and carpet. Allow floors to thoroughly dry.

3.1.2 Ensure floors are level, with maximum surface variation of 1/4 inch in 10 feet noncumulative.

3.1.3 Use an approved cementitious filler to patch cracks, small holes and for leveling.

3.2 INSTALLATION:

3.2.1 Check matching of carpet before cutting and ensure there is no visible variation between dye lots.

3.2.2 Cut carpet, where required, in manner to allow proper seam and pattern match. Ensure cuts are straight and true and unfrayed.

3.2.3 Where possible and practical, locate seams in areas of least amount of traffic.

3.2.4 Join seams in recommended manner so as not to detract from the appearance of the carpet installation and decrease its life expectancy.

Ensure seams are straight, not overlapped or peaked, and free from gaps.

3.2.5 Vacuum clean substrate. Spread adhesive in quantity

recommended by manufacturer after primer application to ensure proper adhesion over full area of installation. Apply only enough adhesive to permit proper adhesion of carpet before initial set.

3.2.6 Lay carpet on floors with the run of the pile in same

direction of anticipated traffic.

3.2.7 Do not change run of pile in any one room.

3.2.8 Cut and fit carpet neatly around projections through floor and to walls and other vertical surfaces.

3.2.9 Fit carpet snugly to walls or other vertical surfaces where no base is scheduled, leaving no gaps.

3.2.10 Do not place heavy objects such as furniture on carpeted surfaces for minimum of 24 hours or until adhesive is set.

3.2.11 Entire carpet installation is to be laid tight and flat to subfloor, well fastened at edges and present a uniform pleasing appearance.

Ensure monolithic color, pattern and texture match within any one area.

3.2.12 Install edging strips where carpet terminates at other floor coverings or where difference in carpet pile height occur. Use full length pieces only.

Butt tight to vertical surfaces. Where splicing cannot be avoided, butt ends tight and flush.
