QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

8 Nov 2018

1. QUESTION: If crack sealing is required. How long does it need to cure before asphalt is placed?

ANSWER: Cure time for the crack sealant material will be dependent on the manufacturer’s recommendations.

2. QUESTION: Will the milled surface be checked for smoothness prior to crack seal being placed ?

ANSWER: Crack sealant material should finish below the surface of the pavement, see specifications, thus it should have no effect on smoothness testing required by the specification.

Smoothness testing may occur before or after sealing operations.

3. QUESTION: The Surface requirements require a gyratory design in the specifications. Can the stability and flow be waived since it uses the 6 inch pills (Marshall design pills) ?

ANSWER: This is a superpave specification, thus stability and flow are not relevant. Any references to stability and flow may be ignored.

4. QUESTION: What is the time span allowed before cold joints are required to be milled?

ANSWER: There is not a specified time limit. The contractor will need to demonstrate, including during the test section and production paving, that his methods will comply with the specification.

All transverse joints shall be cut back. All longitudinal joints shall be either paved in tandem or cut back. All joints must meet density requirements. Any asphalt that is defective, in any way, will have to be removed, full depth. Refer to the specifications.

5. QUESTION: What procedure will be used if after milling there are subgrade issues found?

ANSWER: In general, the top 2 inches of an existing 4”- 18” thick asphalt section is being milled.

No subgrade will be encountered. In the outer sections of the runway to be milled, base course material may be present below the asphalt. There are currently no signs of structural failure or distress in these areas, thus no rework of base is anticipated. Notify the contracting officer of any areas if structural distress are found.
