About this file
This document is a Salient Characteristics letter specifying requirements for the procurement of a quantitative respirator fit tester (QNFT) to support military respiratory protection programs. The specified equipment is the PortaCount Model 8040 Respirator Fit Tester, which must utilize Condensation Nuclei Counter (CNC) technology to simultaneously measure ambient aerosol concentrations inside and outside respirator masks. The device must be capable of testing all tight-fitting respirators with ≥99% filter efficiency, including SCBA, CBRN masks (M50/M51), and elastomeric half/full facepieces, with a fit factor measurement range of 1 to 10,000+ and particle detection capability in the 0.02 to 1.0 micrometer size range.
The equipment must comply with automated protocols per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 and ANSI/ASSP Z88.10 standards. Operationally, the device requires a Real-Time FitCheck Mode for immediate respirator adjustment during donning, a touchscreen interface for standalone operation compatible with PC-based group data management software, and data transfer capability via WiFi, Bluetooth, and USB-C. The unit must be field-deployable with a maximum weight of 5.0 lbs and include a ruggedized transport case. The software must enable a single administrator to manage up to four units simultaneously from one interface.
