About this file
This document is a Salient Characteristics specification for M4 Trainer Weapons issued by 502 CONS/PKBC at JBSA Lackland, Texas under solicitation F2MTBG6202A001.
The M4 Trainer Weapon is a non-weapon training device designed exclusively for Air Force Basic Military Training weapon-handling instruction. The device replicates the external form factor of an M4-style duty weapon while maintaining permanent internal design features that ensure it remains ATF-exempt and non-convertible to a functional firearm. The trainer supports takedown, cleaning, handling, and familiarization tasks without the risks associated with functional firearms. Key technical safeguards against conversion include components manufactured below critical tolerances for firearm operation, structural geometries preventing installation of firearm components, and material removal paths that would destroy structural integrity if modification is attempted. The internal upper receiver contains no chamber, barrel structure, or rifling, with permanent physical obstruction preventing ammunition insertion or loading. The lower receiver incorporates a purpose-built non-gun trigger with an intentionally drilled trigger pivot pin designed to irreversibly disable the device if any modification is attempted. The bolt assembly is not compatible with functional firearm bolts or components.
Physical specifications require the trainer to weigh approximately 6.5 pounds (±0.5 lbs) with a 14.5-inch barrel length and overall length of 29.75 inches with stock closed or 33 inches with stock extended. The device must include one standard metal 30-round magazine, black MIL-SPEC furniture including buttstock, pistol grip and handguard, and a standard 1-inch nylon sling with minimum two metal/plastic buckles. The trainer must be disassembled into ten major components consistent with standard M4 platform familiarization training: upper receiver, lower receiver, charging handle, bolt, bolt carrier, firing pin, firing pin retaining pin, cam pin, buffer, and action spring. The trigger must be secured using an anti-walk pin to ensure durability and structural integrity during training operations.
