SLD 45/ Patrick SFB & Cape Canaveral SFS requires a carpet that can resist mold and moisture. Patrick SFB wants to use the Air Force Carpet program, but only select the Milliken brand because it meets our needs with regards to mold resistance.
Patrick SFB and Cape Canaveral SFS is located in an area with long periods of very high humidity. The open-cell backed carpeting with "TractionBack" backing wicks any moisture, from slab or humidity, up into the backing and out to the seams, and allows evaporation without trapping any moisture underneath to form mold (and glue is a food source for mold). Moisture barriers do not withstand over time and high relative humidity at times creates moisture issues, even on upper floors. There have been situations here where moisture was so excessive in the concrete slab that the glue did not hold and the carpet tiles lifted and slid, causing a safety hazard. All of the other carpets on the BPA have hard, closed-cell backing and has been used in the past and mold issues continue to be an issue. This has not been an issue since Milliken with "TractionBack" has been installed.
At this time there are no other manufacturers which provide this open-cell backing and means of adhering to the sub-floor without using glue. For the 25 years, since their carpet tile's introduction, Milliken Carpet has never had a moisture claim.
The products are comparatively, evenly priced. Milliken Carpet products are included in the Mandatory Use program.

The customer is correct that Milliken's offering is the only one of it's kind on the program. Their "breathable" carpet mitigates moisture from the top down and from the slab up.
