About this file
The document is a Salient Characteristics specification for Mobile Shelves, detailing technical requirements for retrofitting an existing electric mobile shelving system with a manual hand crank system. Key specifications include a steel shelving unit frame, a floor-mounted track system, and triple arm aluminum or steel operating wheels with rotating hand knobs located 46 inches from the base. The drive system is designed with a mechanically assisted mechanism that ensures smooth, uniform carriage movement, with the ability to move up to 4,000 lbs of load using minimal force. Safety features include color-coded visual indicators to verify carriage lock status and a single safety lock button on each operating wheel hub to control carriage movement and locking.
The document specifies precise technical requirements for the drive system, including a synchro drive that ensures front and back carriage alignment, a chain sprocket drive system for uniform movement, and permanently shielded and lubricated bearings. A tensioning device is included for chain drive adjustment without removing end panels. The overall design aims to provide a reliable, smooth-operating manual mobile shelving system that can be easily operated and locked, with components selected to ensure consistent performance across the entire carriage length.

Salient Characteristics Mobile Shelves
• Shelving Unit retrofit the electric control mechanism with a manual hand crank system
• Shelving Unit Frame Material: Steel
• Floor-Mounted Track System: The tracks system shall be inspected during and after the removal of the mechanical operating system. If needed, tracks shall be repaired to ensure the smooth operation of the newly installed manual hand crank system. This will ensure the system complies and works as designed to operate on a floor mounted track system that exists and originally designed for Storage Systems, Synchro Rail.
• Movement Controls: Triple arm aluminum or steel operating wheels with rotating hand knobs shall be provided on the accessible (drive) ends of shelf units, centered on the end panel, located 46 inches (1168.4MM) from the base of each unit to permit units to be moved to create a single aisle opening. Turning the handle transmits power through chain drive to drive wheels on each carriage.
• Drive System: The system shall be designed with a positive type of mechanically assisted drive which minimizes end play, ensures there is no play in the drive handle, and that carriages will include a brake system that will stop without drifting and not move. The unit shall include a synchro drive which assures the front and back of each carriage are moving in perfect alignment.
• The system shall include a chain sprocket drive system for each movable carriage to ensure that carriages move uniformly along the total length of travel, even with unbalanced loads. All system components shall be selected to ensure a smooth, even movement along the entire carriage length. The Drive system gearing shall be designed to permit 1 lb. of force applied to the drive handle to move a minimum of 4,000 lbs. of load.
• A tensioning device shall be provided on each chain drive with provision for adjusting tension without removing end panels.
• All bearings used in the drive mechanism shall be permanently shielded and lubricated.
• Safety Features:
o Color-coded visual indicators shall provide verification that carriages are in a locked or unlocked mode.
o A single safety lock button, mounted on each operating wheel hub, will permit moving a carriage in either direction to create a new access aisle when pulled out (unlocked), or locking the carriage when pushed in.
