About this file
The document is an inspection report for the Niver1 Bridge, a prestressed concrete double tee beam bridge located on the Farmers High Line Canal Trail in Westminster, Colorado. The bridge, which carries the trail over the Farmers High Line/Niver Canal, was inspected on 3/12/2025 by a team led by D. KRAUSE from Benesch. The structure is 40'-1" long, 7'-9" wide, and features a 3½" concrete deck, timber rails on steel tube posts, and concrete abutments with wingwalls.
The inspection revealed significant structural deterioration, including widespread deck damage, corrosion of rail posts, and multiple cracks and delaminations in the beam top flanges at both abutments. The bridge is rated in poor overall condition, with specific concerns including deck corners with heavy disintegration, exposed and corroded rebar, vertical differentials between approaches, and structural cracks at bearing points. The recommendations include comprehensive repairs such as deck replacement, concrete sealing, approach sidewalk raising, rail base plate replacement, and beam stem bearing stabilization. Due to the extent of damage, the report suggests scheduling routine inspections every 24 months to monitor the bridge's continued deterioration.

Niver Canal 1 Bridge Repair inspection Memo and Scope of Work
Structure Summary:
Niver1 carries Farmers High Line Canal trail over Farmers High Line/Niver Canal in Westminster, Colorado. The bridge is located at 39° 52’ 4.08” N, 105° 4’ 7.91” W and approximately 70 feet northwest of N Lamar Street. The structure is inventoried west to east, superstructure is named Stem A to B from north to south, substructure is numbered Abutment 1 to 2 from west to east. Below is a summary of the main structural components:
• (1) prestressed concrete double tee beam
• 1 span
• 40’-1’ structure length
• 7’-9” out-out width
• 3 ½” concrete deck on 2” top flange
• Timber rails on steel tube posts mounted through top flange
• Concrete abutments with concrete wingwalls
• 8’-0” wide concrete approach sidewalks
Condition Summary:
• NBI Deck Condition: 4
• NBI Superstructure Condition: 5
• NBI Substructure Condition: 8
• NBI Channel Condition: 7
Deck has scattered, minor abrasion throughout. All corners have wide diagonal cracks with heavy disintegration up to 1 inch deep, mirroring the top flange cracks. Deck at the north rail 1st and 2nd posts from west is disintegrated and spalled to the top flange up to 10 feet x 21 inches x 3.5 inches deep, exposing corroded rebar and rail posts. Deck at north rail east post has 32 inch x 8 inch x 3.5 inch deep spall, exposing corroded rail post.
Both approaches are lower than bridge deck with short concrete wedges at junction; west approach has a 5 inch vertical differential, east approach has 3.5 inch vertical differential.
Timber rail has minor to moderate checks throughout; north rail at west end has a 41 inch x 1 inch x full depth check. Rail post base plates at top flange have moderate corrosion.

Beam exterior top flanges have minor to moderate abrasion with light efflorescence and rust stains throughout.
Beam exterior top flanges have minor spalling around old post connections. North beam top flange at Abutment 1 has a medium, full depth diagonal crack. North beam top flange at Abutment 2 has severed with wide cracks up to 0.25 inch wide x full depth and spalled/delaminated for 44 inches x 16 inches x 1.5 inches deep; severed section is 0.25 inch lower than sound top flange. South beam top flange at Abutment 1 has (2) wide cracks up to 18 inches x 1 inch wide x full depth. South beam top flange at Abutment 2 has a wide diagonal crack up to 14 inches x 0.1875 inch wide x full depth. Beam top flange interior fillets have insignificant to medium longitudinal cracks with efflorescence at abutments; insignificant to medium diagonal cracks branch off from fillets. Stem A top flange fillet crack at Abutment 1 has heavy rust staining for 10 inches.
Double tee beam stems bear on elastomeric pads at abutments. Stem A at Abutment 1 bearing has 12 inch medium horizontal crack, delaminated at bearing pad. Stem B north face at Abutment 1 bearing has 32 inch x
0.125 inch horizontal crack with 1 inch wide delamination; south face has 14 inch x 2 inch delamination along bottom and full height x 1.5 inch vertical crack/delamination along backwall. Stem B Abutment 1 bearing pad is crushed and split. Stem A at Abutment 2 bearing has wide horizontal crack with 16 inch x 1 inch delamination;
bearing pad is crushed and split.
Concrete abutments and wingwalls are in good condition. End diaphragms have minor efflorescence staining.
Controlled flow runs south to north through a well-defined channel with vegetated banks. Channel was dry at time of inspection.

Recommendations:
1. Replace concrete deck and seal to mitigate deterioration and rail post corrosion.
a. Concrete Removal
b. Concrete Deck Replacement
c. Concrete Sealer
2. Raise approach sidewalks to top flange height to eliminate vertical differential at bridge ends.
a. Approach Sidewalk Replacement
b. Structural Backfill
3. Replace rail base plates and clean and seal corroded rail posts to prevent further deterioration.
4. Remove severed corners of top flange, clean and seal rebar, and patch with reinforced concrete to prevent further deterioration.
a. Concrete Removal
b. Reinforcing Sealant
c. Concrete Patching
5. Remove delaminated concrete at beam stem bearings, epoxy inject cracks and patch with high strength concrete to stabilize concrete.
a. Epoxy Injection
b. Concrete Removal and Patching
Niver1 bridge is in overall poor condition due to widespread deck deterioration and beam top flange damage.
Deck deterioration is primarily on the exterior edges and corners but will advance into the pedestrian path over time. Deck replacement and beam top flange repair are high priorities for this structure. It is recommended that Niver1 be scheduled for routine inspections on a 24 month interval due to the deck and beam top flange deterioration.
