About this file
This document is a detailed section of a federal construction specification for earthwork, specifically Section 31 20 11 Earthwork (Short Form). The specification provides comprehensive requirements for excavation, fill, backfill, and site restoration for a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) project, covering everything from site preparation to final grading and landscaping.
Key technical requirements include excavation classifications, material specifications for fills and bedding, utility trench construction guidelines, and compaction standards. The specification mandates specific procedures for handling excavated materials, including requirements for borrow materials, proof-rolling, and compaction techniques. It also details landscaping requirements such as seeding and sodding, with precise instructions on topsoil preparation, fertilization, and installation methods. The document emphasizes environmental considerations, requiring proper disposal of unsuitable materials and careful handling of excavation to minimize environmental impact. Compaction standards require achieving 95% of maximum density for most fill areas, with slightly different requirements for areas adjacent to structures.
