About this file

This is a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for Fuel Oil, Reclaimed (FOR), prepared in accordance with federal regulations (Federal Register Vol. 77, No. 58, dated March 26, 2012). The document was created by Fleet Logistics Center Norfolk Fuel Department in Portsmouth, Virginia, with an emergency contact number of 757-322-9044. The product is classified as a combustible liquid mixture containing various petroleum fuels and used lubricating oils, with a composition range of 60-100% diesel fuel (No. 2) and minor components including naphthalene (1-5%), distillates petroleum hydrotreated heavy paraffinic (1-5%), benzene trimethyl (1-5%), ethylbenzene (0.1-1%), and phosphorodithioic acid zinc salts (0.1-1%).

The material presents multiple hazards requiring careful handling. It is classified as a flammable liquid (Category 4) with a flash point of 60-93°C, causes serious eye irritation (Category 2A), and may cause cancer (Category 1B) as well as organ damage through prolonged exposure (Category 2 STOT RE). Physical and chemical properties include a relative density of 0.83-0.9, kinematic viscosity of 2-15 cSt at 40°C, and complete insolubility in water. For transport, the product is designated as NA1202 (Combustible liquid, n.o.s.) under Department of Transportation regulations with Packing Group III and quantity limitations of 60 liters for passenger aircraft/rail and 220 liters for cargo aircraft. The SDS specifies comprehensive personal protective equipment requirements including chemical-resistant gloves, eye protection, face shields, protective clothing, and NIOSH-approved respirators. Storage must occur in dry, cool, well-ventilated areas in tightly closed containers, with disposal requiring consultation with pollution control authorities and licensed hazardous-waste contractors.
