About this file
This document is an Exhibit C detailing Food/Attractant Storage Provisions for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Missoula Field Office, associated with Solicitation No. 140L0625Q0020. The provisions outline comprehensive guidelines for managing food, garbage, and wildlife-related attractants in outdoor settings to minimize bear interactions, applicable to contractors and permit holders working in the area.
The document specifies six approved bear-resistant storage techniques, including securing items in hard-sided vehicles/structures, suspending items at least 10 feet high and 4 feet from supports, using bear-resistant containers, or employing electric fencing. Additional requirements include: daytime food accessibility with adult supervision, nighttime storage protocols, proper disposal of food waste, and specific handling of wildlife carcasses within 1/2-mile of camp areas. These detailed provisions aim to prevent wildlife encounters and protect both human safety and local ecosystems during field operations.

a. During daytime hours, food and attractants may be accessible and in use provided that at least one adult person, 18 years of age or older, is physically present within 100 feet of food/attractants. During nighttime hours, all food/attractants will be stored in a bear-resistant manner.
b. When camps are unattended, food, garbage, and other attractants, including all livestock grain and pellets, will be stored using an approved bear-resistant storage technique.
Approved Bear-Resistant Storage Techniques: When unattended and during nighttime hours, all attractants, including food and garbage, must be stored in one of the following ways:
• Secured in a hard-sided camper or vehicle trunk or cab or trailer cab.

2. Attractants, such as food leftovers or cooking grease, will not be buried, discarded, or burned in an open campfire:
a. Leftover food or food waste products may be placed in an appropriate, sealed container and packed out with garbage.
b. Leftover food or other attractants may be burned in a contained stove fire.
c. Attractants may be placed into a suitable container (i.e. tin can) to prevent leaching into the ground and burned over an open campfire. Any remaining attractants unconsumed by burning will be placed with other garbage and packed out.
