About this file

This document provides packaging instructions for circuit card and printed circuit board assemblies. It specifies that items must be preserved in accordance with MIL-STD-2073-1 and unit packed using specialized preservation code "GX" for electrostatic sensitive assemblies, which involves wrapping or cushioning with antistatic materials and placing in antistatic bags within conductive containers labeled as ESD sensitive. Non-ESD sensitive items are to be wrapped in barrier material and bagged for unit packing. It also requires palletization for quantities over 250 pounds or 20 cubic feet per destination and compliance with ISPM 15 for all wood packaging materials.

1. PRESERVATION. In accordance with MIL-STD-2073-1, as specified herein, ensuring compliance with the applicable requirements of that standard.

1.1 Military.

1.1.1 Electrostatic sensitive assemblies. Unit pack each assembly using the specialized preservation code “GX” as follows: Wrap or cushion with antistatic materials (as required). Place item within a bag conforming to

MIL-DTL-117, Type I, Class F, Style 1. Heat seal bag. Reclosable cushioned pouches conforming to MIL-DTL-81997, Type I or II, may be used in lieu of initial wrap or cushioning. Place a MIL-STD-129 electrostatic discharge (ESD) sensitive devices attention label (Figure 1) on the unit pack. Place the unit pack into a container conforming to PPP-B-1672, Type II (see Table I).

Close the container by securing both ends with tape conforming to ASTM D5330 and seal all openings with tape conforming to ASTM D5486, Type V. Place a

MIL-STD-129 ESD sensitive devices attention label (Figure 1) on the box.

1.1.2 Non-ESD sensitive assemblies. Unit pack each assembly using Method 41, as follows: Wrap with barrier material conforming to MIL-PRF-121, Type I.

Place the item into a bag conforming to MIL-DTL-117, Type I or IV, Class E, Style 1. Heat seal bag. Place bagged item into a cushioned box conforming to PPP-B-1672, Type II. Close the container by securing both ends with tape conforming to ASTM D5330 and seal all openings with tape conforming to ASTM D

1.2 Unitization. Palletization shall be required when quantities per destination exceed either a total of 250 pounds (excluding the pallet) or a volume of 20 cubic feet. A quantity of items, packed for shipment, shall be placed on pallets, standard size 40 x 48 inches, 4-way entry, conforming to

ASME MH1, Class 1 or 2, Type 3, any Style, or Part 9 of the document, Size 2

(40 x 48 inches). The load shall be “bonded” to the pallet by any means that will ensure safe delivery to destination. MIL-STD-147 covers the methods, materials, and techniques to be employed in the formation of bonded palletized unit loads of military supplies.

2. REQUIREMENTS FOR WOOD PACKAGING MATERIAL. All CONUS and OCONUS shipments utilizing wood packaging material, such as pallets, dunnage, crating, packing blocks, drums, cases, load boards, pallet collars, and skids, shall meet the

International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures, ISPM 15, entitled

“Regulation of Wood Packaging Material in International Trade”.
