About this file
Exhibit B - Specifications Summary
This is a specifications document for the West Virginia University Personal Rapid Transit (WVU-PRT) system outlining requirements for cleaning and washing elevated guideway structures. The project scope includes comprehensive cleaning of all guideway pier surfaces to remove organic and inorganic debris through a two-phase process: pre-wash dry cleaning followed by low-pressure water washing. The work encompasses treatment of cap beams, abutment seats, girder flanges, diaphragms, bracing, and all other structural guideway members. The contractor must employ dry cleaning methods using brooms, brushes, shovels, vacuums, or equivalent means to remove loose dirt and debris before proceeding to wet washing operations.
The low-pressure washing operations must be conducted using rotary nozzle equipment at pressures between 3,000 and 4,500 psi, with the nozzle positioned 4 to 8 inches from surfaces. All wash water must be filtered through 40 mesh or finer material to capture debris. The contractor is required to implement comprehensive protection measures including tarpauls and barrier systems to shield the public, vehicles, pedestrians, adjacent structures, PRT vehicles, and non-structural guideway components from fugitive materials and debris. Cleaning operations are prohibited when freezing temperatures exist or are anticipated to occur while structures remain wet, and the contractor must sequence work to prevent recontamination before project completion.

WVU-PRT SPECTFICATIONS
CLEAN AND WASH GUIDEWAY STRUCTURES
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
A. This Section includes the cleaning and washing of guideway structures to remove organic and inorganic debris.
B. The work shall consist of a pre-wash cleaning followed by a complete washing with low pressure water.
C. All surfaces of the entire pier are to recieve the clean and wash treatment.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 CLEANING MATERIALS
A. Water: Potable.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 CLEANING PROCEDURE
A. Pre-Wash Cleaning:
1. Clean by dry methods all loose dirt and debris from the cap beam/abutment seats, girder flanges, diaphragms, bracing, and other guideway structure members prior to any wet washing operations.
2. Cleaning may include the use of brooms, brushes, shovels, vacuums, or other suitable means.
B. Washing with Low-Pressure Water:
1. Completely wash the specified areas of guideway structure and cap beam/abutment seats with low pressure water.
2. Washing shall be accomplished with a low pressure washer at a minimum pressure of
3,000 psi and a maximum pressure of 4,500 psi, at the nozzle end, with the nozzle 4 in. to 8 in. from the surface.
3. The nozzle type shall be a rotary nozzle.
4. All wash water shall be filtered with a 40 or finer mesh material to catch debris.
C. Protection:
1. During cleaning operations, the Contractor shall protect the public (vehicles, pedestrians, adjacent building or structures, PRT vehicles) and non-structural PRT guideway components from fugitive materials by the use of tarpaulins or other suitable means.
2. Protect pedestrians, vehicular, adjacent building or structures, and other traffic upon or underneath the structure and all workers.

3. Include a barrier system that protects against direct or indirect blasting of vehicles, adjacent building or structures, and pedestrians; prevents abrasive materials and debris from falling on the traveled portions of the pavement or into waterways; and prevents the spreading of abrasive materials and debris into any area where it may create a traffic hazard.
4. The Contractor's washing sequence and plans shall not allow the possibility of recontamination before cleaning and/or other work shown on the plans are completed. No cleaning shall be performed when temperatures are such that freezing could occur or that it is anticipated that temperatures could drop to freezing while the structure is wet.
