About this file
This is a catalog publication from the Michigan Army National Guard's Fort Custer Training Center (FCTC) located in Battle Creek, Michigan, documenting the ranges, training areas, and facilities available for units and agencies conducting training operations. The catalog describes fourteen numbered ranges and supporting facilities designed to accommodate various weapon systems and training requirements, including pistol, rifle, shotgun, grenade, mortar, anti-armor, and demolition training. Range capabilities vary significantly, with facilities supporting qualification courses, known-distance firing at distances up to 1,000 yards, and specialized training such as combat pistol qualification, hand grenade training, and breaching operations. Supporting training devices and facilities include the EST II Engagement Skills Trainer in Building 2860, the HEAT trainer for vehicle egress simulation, the Virtual Convoy Operations Trainer (VCOT-C2), IED training systems with five large trainers and multiple supporting equipment pieces, and various confidence courses and obstacle training areas. The publication specifies firing points, locations (identified by facility management coordinates), authorized weapons systems and ammunition types, target configurations, range safety protocols, operator requirements, asset availability, and operational restrictions for each range and facility.
Scheduling of all ranges and training areas is conducted through the Range Facility Management Scheduling System (RFMSS) with Range Control, and units must arrive within one hour of scheduled times or forfeit their reservation. Most ranges require hearing protection to be provided by the using unit, and many facilities impose specific restrictions on ammunition types, charge limits, personnel access beyond firing lines, and concurrent operations with adjacent ranges. The document specifies that certain ammunition types are restricted by DODIC code, detailed in FCTC Regulation 385-63, and that some specialized training devices such as IED simulators require 90 days' advance request notice and completion of prerequisite Fort Custer IED Simulator Training. Range Control contact information is provided as (269) 282-7559, with commercial inquiries directed to (269) 282-7875.

TRAINING FACILITIES, SIMULATORS AND DEVICES
IED TRAINING DEVICES: We currently have the TIED II training systems. The TIED II consists of an IED trainer, Land Mine trainer and Trip Wire Trainer. In addition to the TIED II systems, we have suicide vests and a mortar simulator. In total we have 5 large IED trainers, 3 pipe bomb trainers, 6 Land Mine trainers, 6 Trip
Wire trainers and 2 suicide vests. In order to draw any of these devices, you must complete the Fort Custer
IED Simulator Training. Requests for the training devices must be made 90 days in advance. The only exception to this is a deployment.
EST II (Engagement Skills Trainer): Located in BLDG 2860.
Supports realistic and comprehensive gated rifle marksmanship instruction, identifies Soldiers' needs by requiring them to satisfy gate requirements in order to progress, and facilitates any necessary remedial training prior to qualification. Ft Custer has a 10 lane heavy range that has the capabilities to fire eleven weapons. 6-M16A2 Rifle, 2-M16A4 MWS, 4-M4 MWS, 2-M9 Pistol, 2-M249, 2-M240B Machine Gun, 2-
M2 .50 caliber Machine Gun, 2-MK19 Grenade Machine Gun, 4-M136
Anti-Tank Weapon, 2- M1200 Shotgun. The M16A4, M4, M249 and M240B have picatinny rail systems for optic and laser mounting. 3ea ACOG and 9ea M68 CCO optics are available for use. The system is night vision capable and can be used with night vision, IR lasers (PEQ’s and PAC-4’s), and optics, all of which must be brought by the using unit. It has three modes of training: 1) Marksmanship training, 2)
Tactical collective training, 3) Shoot/don't shoot rules of engagement training. When the unit wants to utilize the M-2 or MK-19 the unit must bring their own pintles, T&E’s and MK-19 carriage and cradle. Unit must provide 1 certified operator.
CALL FOR FIRE TRAINER III (CFFT III)
The Call For Fire Trainer (CFFT) III family of systems provide institutional and rapidly deployable observed fire training for Fire Support Specialists (FSS), Joint Fires Observers (JFO), and Soldiers.
The system provides training to conduct Indirect Fires, Precision Targeting, and Close Air Support, Close Combat Attack (Deliberate and Hasty Attack), and Naval Surface Fire Support. The CFFT III provides the capability for Army, Joint, Multinational, and Special Operations Forces to conduct advanced, complex, and realistic fires training.
HEAT TRAINER (HIGH MOBILITY MULTIPURPOSE WHEELED VEHICLE (HMMWV) EGRESS
ASSISTANCE TRAINER): Location is BLDG 2860.
Simulates an up armored HMMWV rollover or roll to left or right, then trains the vehicle occupants to successfully egress from the rolled HMMWV by emphasizing teamwork through crew/battle drills. Two licensed operators are required, with a current DD 1902, which must be updated every calendar year.
Soldiers must complete a block of training before entering the HEAT. A Composite Risk Management worksheet must be signed by an O-5 or above, also a combat lifesaver with ambulance or litter capable vehicle is required on site. Ft Custer currently has one HEAT trainer. Allow 15-20 minutes per group of 5 Soldiers.
VIRTUAL CONVOY OPERATIONS TRAINER (VCOT-C2 version): Located in semi-trailer on east side of
BLDG 2860.
The VCOT is a training device that enables units to train for convoy operations in virtual combat environment. It's used to develop specific skills and knowledge that directly relate to convoy situations.
The system has the flexibility to allow leaders to choose the right vehicle mix for their convoy, the weapon system employed on each vehicle, the routes along which the convoy will travel, and the type and strength of enemy activity along the convoy route. The VCOT can simulate up to 4 vehicles, 2 with Driver, Gunner and TC in each vehicle and 2 with Driver and Gunner. The VCOT may be operated either as a collective training system where all crew stations operate together or as a gunnery trainer where crew stations operate independently. A TC with a head mounted display (HMD) and a wireless weapon in order to 'step outside' the vehicle. The driver has 3 monitors for peripheral vision, and simulated vehicle controls. Two radios replicate the frequency for the convoy and the higher headquarters. The gunner has a 360 degree traversing station, with HMD and a simulated gun representing the M2 HBMG, MK19, M240 or M249. A typical scenario takes approximately 20 minutes from start to release points. To that, you need to add training time for planning, mission rehearsal and AAR. One certified operator is required to run the system.
UNSTABILIZED GUNNERY TRAINER – INDIVIDUAL (UGT-I) Located in BLDG 2860.
The UGT-I or Brigade Combat Team – Individual Reality Training systems are a Table II requirement according to TC 3-20.31. Consisting of one each 240B, M2 .50, and MK19 grenade launcher systems, soldiers can practice using proper gunnery commands as well as engage and destroy targets from a simulated turret both stationary and while moving. This system helps the soldier become well versed with gunnery commands as well as familiarize the soldier with the weapon system, traverse and elevation device, and the PAS-13 thermal optic. Once a soldier becomes proficient and completes all tasks and range performance measures the soldier can then complete the Gate to Live Fire exercise. A score of
700/1000 with 7/10 successful engagements must be met to continue on to Table III.
COUNTER IMPROVISED EXPLOSIVE DEVICE (CIED) TRAINING AREA:
The IED Training Area, FM39738176, consists of six teaching boards and 20 testing stations. Each of the teaching boards cover the most common types of IED’s found in country.
