About this file
This document is a 22-page technical presentation titled "Pre-Placed Crypts (PPCs) 101" created by the National Cemetery Administration, specifically developed by Andrew J. Walters, PE, a Specialist in Cemetery Development & Improvement Service. The presentation provides a comprehensive overview of the process of installing pre-placed concrete crypts in national cemeteries, detailing the step-by-step methodology for crypt placement and burial preparation.
The presentation outlines the technical process of creating and installing quad crypts, which are concrete structures designed to hold four caskets. Key steps include pouring fluid concrete into steel forms, curing the crypts for 48 hours, installing them with precise tolerances, adding drainage features, and backfilling with sand and topsoil. The presentation also highlights potential issues that can arise during installation, such as wall collapse, which can be caused by heavy vehicles or equipment coming within 10 yards of the crypt field. The primary advantage of pre-placed crypts is reducing burial depth from 8 feet to only 22 inches, simplifying the burial process and minimizing potential complications.

Crypts 101 slides to date:
1. Overall
2. Inspection & Protection
3. On-site Buried Testing
4. Wall Repair
Why PPCs? Eliminates issues of 8-ft dig depth.
Besides only digging 22” to a crypt lid, this is avoided.
National Cemetery Administration
Pour fluid concrete into steel Quad crypt forms.
Remove forms in 24 hrs. Let cure for 48 hours.
Each Quad crypt has two lids and holds four caskets.
Crypts are thin-wall vessels (2” walls). Handle with care.
Excavate PPC fields, place fabric, install drain rock & piping.
Set crypts to ¼” tolerance onto 3-ft x 8-ft plots (typical).
Aerial View of same.
Lids lifted to paint crypt numbers on inside walls.
A proper inside-shelf fit. Shelf holds the 2nd casket if any.
Smooth inside walls and large floor drain holes.
Pea gravel installed into gaps between crypts
Backfill 22” over crypt lids with sand, dirt and topsoil.
Sod and lawn irrigation installed.
Dig is ONLY 22” to lid, remove lid & shelf. No 8-ft deep dig.
Ramps & Casket Lowering Device (CLD)
Lid replaced. Backfill graded dirt over lid and compacted.
Sod placed and headstones installed. Done.
So what can go wrong? Collapsed walls can happen if:
If water trucks get within 10 yds of the PPC field
If concrete trucks get within 10 yds of a PPC field.
If fully-loaded dump trucks get within 10 yds of PPC field If tall piles of material get within 10 yds of PPC field
