About this file
This is an informational appendix document from the State of Texas, specifically designed to assist Veteran Heroes United in Business (VetHUB) participants in navigating the procurement process. The document explains the NIGP (National Institute of Governmental Purchasing) Commodity/Services Code system, which Texas uses to classify and categorize all state procurements. The NIGP coding structure organizes commodities and products under Class Codes 001 to 899, while services are classified under codes 900 to 999. The document provides examples of commodity codes (such as 02543 for high-pressure compressors and 20453 for desktop microcomputers) and service codes (such as 91821 for business consulting and 96866 for right of way services), demonstrating how diverse products and services are classified within the system.
The Statewide Procurement Division (SPD) and the Texas Department of Information Resources utilize NIGP codes to match vendors with state needs and facilitate sourcing through statewide contracts. Bidders can access the complete NIGP classification book and search functionality through the Texas CPA website at mycpa.cpa.state.tx.us/commbook/indexSearch. The document encourages respondents to familiarize themselves with the NIGP format and coding system to properly classify their products or services and leverage the Centralized Master Bidders List (CMBL), which is the master database used by Texas purchasing entities to identify qualified vendors and develop mailing lists for bid opportunities based on vendor capabilities.
