About this file

This file contains daily and weekly environmental cleanup reports from EnviroServe documenting response activities at Lake Storey in Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois from February 14 through April 19, 2024. The cleanup operation addressed a diesel fuel contamination incident affecting three coves of Lake Storey and a generator location site. The response activities included installing containment booms, removing contaminated vegetation, skimming contaminated water, washing bank lines, monitoring contamination levels, and managing waste disposal. Major equipment deployed included over 120 petroleum absorbing soft booms, 800 feet of river level hard boom, 100 feet of creek level hard boom, and multiple frac tanks for contaminated water storage.

By the end of the reporting period, EnviroServe had disposed of 182 tons of solid waste and 144,000 gallons of liquid waste. The cleanup progressed through several phases, including initial containment, active remediation of three affected coves, removal of contaminated soil and concrete at the generator site, and final environmental sampling. PID readings for benzene levels were monitored throughout the excavation process, with readings ranging from 17-148 ppm. The final phase included collecting grid pattern samples submitted to Pace Laboratories, with results expected by April 25, 2024.

• Team explored lake on watercraft. -

▪ Discovered the extent of contamination appears to be contained to the 3 coves and bank-lines of those three coves.

• Activity of Cove 1-

▪ Pom installed to assist in collection. Saturated boom is beginning to be removed as needed. Moving forward, Hard boom will remain installed, soft boom will be removed as needed. Oil snaring will also be conducted. Continued efforts of skimming with the vacuum truck. Vegetation removal has and will continue.

• Activity of Cove 2-

▪ Cove 2 is still contained utilizing soft boom, with anticipation of installing hard, river level boom by EOD 2/15/2024

• Activity of Cove 3-

▪ 32 soft booms have been installed, as well as 1- hard river level boom was installed. Efforts to begin removal of contaminates are anticipated to begin later this week.

• Activity on Main Body of Lake

▪ 1- creek level hard boom placed at East end of lake flowing into Lincoln Park.

• Activity on Main Site (Generator Location) -

▪ The generator has been removed and placed into a containment on site. Efforts to remove the concrete have begun, exploration of the substrate below has shown significant diesel contamination. EnviroServe will continue to remove concrete as needed and as discussed. A cone of depression has been created in efforts to pull contamination out of the substrate to be collected.

To date, EnviroServe has deployed the following resources:

• 101- petroleum absorbing Soft Boom

• 2- River level hard boom

• 1- Creek level hard boom

• 150 ft.- of sheen absorbing Pom

• 3- 55 gal Poly drums

To date, EnviroServe has removed the following Contaminants:

• 21k Frac tank(533G) ON SITE – 18,500 gal (approx.)

• 1 - 20yd Rolloff box (ROB415) ON SITE (Full with Vegetation Removal)

• 1 – Soft boom (Cove-1)

To date, EnviroServe has disposed of the following waste:

• 0 pounds of total waste disposed.

• 0 gallons of total waste disposed.

Should you have any questions, additional input, or need any other information, please feel free to contact the undersigned at 309-303-7776.
