About this file

The document is a series of Archaeological Site Inventory Forms from the Virginia Division of Historic Landmarks' Research Center for Archaeology, documenting multiple prehistoric and historic archaeological sites at Fort Belvoir in Fairfax County, Virginia. The surveys were conducted by MAAR Associates, Inc. in 1992 as part of a Phase I Investigation of Previously Unsurveyed Areas of Fort Belvoir. The investigation involved systematic shovel testing at 75-foot intervals across various sites, identifying prehistoric campsites, domestic areas, and historic locations dating from the Archaic period through the 19th century. Each site was meticulously documented with details about location, environment, artifacts recovered, site dimensions, and recommendations for further archaeological assessment.

The archaeological sites range in size from 200 to 1050 feet long, located on various terraces, ridges, and slopes near Accotink Creek and its tributaries. Artifacts recovered include quartz and quartzite debitage, flakes, fire-cracked rocks, prehistoric lithic materials, historic ceramics, brick fragments, and occasional finds like projectile points and pottery sherds. Most sites were found to be wooded and undeveloped, with some areas showing evidence of past training activities or land disturbance. The majority of the sites were classified as "potentially significant" and recommended for Phase II testing and assessment to further understand their archaeological and historical context. The documents indicate that the U.S. Army owns the land, and the survey was part of a comprehensive cultural resources management effort at Fort Belvoir.
