1. PURPOSE AND SCOPEOF

The purpose of this investigation is to provide

Fremont Canyon Road (CR 408)

2. PROJECT LOCATION

Fremont Canyon Road is located in project begins at Fremont Canyon Brid

Road (CR 409).

3. GEOLOGICAL SETTING

The geologic map of Wyoming indicates and White River Formation (Twr) have been mapped in this area. Granitic Rock is predominately granite. Miocene r conglomerate in upper and lower parts pink block tuffaceous claystone and lenticular arkosic conglomerate.

SCOPEOF STUDY

The purpose of this investigation is to provide information to support the pavement design

Fremont Canyon Road (CR 408).

Fremont Canyon Road is located in central Wyoming west of Casper in Natrona

Fremont Canyon Bridge and continues southwest for 3.9 miles to

SETTING

The geologic map of Wyoming indicates that the granitic rock (Wg), Miocene and White River Formation (Twr) have been mapped in this area. Granitic Rock is rock is white soft tuffaceous sandstone and locally derived conglomerate in upper and lower parts of sequence. White River Formation is white to pale pink block tuffaceous claystone and lenticular arkosic conglomerate.

This miles to Pathfinder ock (Wg), Miocene rock(Tm) and White River Formation (Twr) have been mapped in this area. Granitic Rock is ock is white soft tuffaceous sandstone and locally derived of sequence. White River Formation is white to pale-

4. SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATION

A total of 16 borings were drilled through the pavement at approximately 1/4 mile intervals for the length of the project. The borings were drilled to a depth of approximately 3 to 5 feet. Both bulk and California tube samples were taken in each boring for testing. A boring location map is presented in Appendix A.

The subgrade soils are quite variable.. The AASHTO classifications of the soils tested were

A-2-4, A-2-6, A-4, A-6 and A-7-6.

Swell / Consolidation measurements were taken on four of the California tube samples with results that ranged from -0.4 percent consolidation to 0.9 percent swell, therefore, no consolidation or swelling problems are anticipated on this project.

The R-value in accordance with AASHTO T199 was measured on four samples from Fremont

Canyon Road. The R-values were 17 and 23 on the A-6 soils, 38 on the A-2 soils and 6 on the

A-7-6 soils. Because of the low traffic volumes, the R-value of 20 was used to represent the subgrade for pavement design, the 50th percentile. Boring logs and soil test data is presented in Appendix B.

A thickness measurement of the existing asphalt pavement was made at each boring location.

No aggregate base was observed in the subgrade immediately below the HACP. Table 1 presents the asphalt pavement thickness for each boring.

5. PAVEMENT DESIGN

5.1 Traffic Loading

The traffic volume estimates for year 2013 and 20-year projected traffic volumes for year 2033 were provided by Atkins. No breakdown of vehicle classifications were presented in that report.

The daily design volume was calculated by determining the average daily volume (ADT) using the 2013 and 2033 volumes. The average daily traffic (ADT) for 2013 is 100 and the projected

ADT for Year 2033 is 120. In order to calculate 20-year equivalent single axle loads (ESAL), the percentage of vehicle in each classification presented in Table 2 was assumed to represent a typical mix of vehicles on this type of road. In addition to the individual classification volumes, ESAL loading factors from the Federal Lands Project Development and Design Manual (PDDM) are also listed in Table 2.

Table 2 Traffic Loading

Vehicle Class

Vehicle Type ESAL Factor

Used % of Volume

Daily Design Volume

2 Passenger Cars 0.0004 68.0 75

3 Pick Ups 0.004 25.8 28

5 Campers & Trash Trucks 0.5 6.0 7

9 5-axle Semis 2.0 0.2 0.2

The resulting Design 20-Year ESAL is 17,009. For low volume roads, the PDDM states that if the design ESAL is less than 50,000, the designer should use a design ESAL value of 50,000.

Calculation of design ESALs is presented in Appendix D.

6. SUBGRADE STRENGTH

Using the following equations from NCHRP Study 72-6 a subgrade resilient modulus of 4,940 psi was calculated from the R-value of 20. This resilient modulus value was used in the

AASHTO Pavement Thickness Design program DARWin, Version 3.1.

Using strength coefficients from the PDDM, Table 3 lists the design parameters used to design the minimum Hot Asphalt Concrete Pavement (HACP) thickness for two treatment options.

Table 3 – Design Parameters

Two alternate treatments were calculated to reconstruct this pavement.

The first option is to pulverize to a depth of 6 inches and then place a minimum of 3.5 inches of new HACP. The second option is to cold recycle existing 5 inches of asphalt pavement followed by placement of 2.5 inches of new HACP. Table 4 presents the two reconstruction options considered.

Table 4 – Thickness Recommendations

Cold Recycle 5 2.5

The output from the DARWin pavement thickness program is presented in Appendix D.

7. HACP MIX AND BINDER RECOMMENDATIONS

Using the Long Term Pavement Performance program LTPPBIND, the recommended binder to provide 98% reliability against low temperature cracking and rutting for Pathfinder Dam located at the west end of the project is PG 52-34. The output from the LTPPBIND program is presented in Figure 1.

As presented in Figure 1, the recommended binder is PG 52-34. If that binder is not available, a binder meeting the requirements for PG 58-34 is also acceptable.

We recommend that the HACP mix for this project be a nominal 1/2 inch mix, Grading D or E, containing the Performance Graded Binder PG 52-34 or PG 58-34.

Figure 1 – LTPPBIND Recommended Binder for Pathfinder Dam

8.CORROSION POTENTIAL

The combined soil samples used for R-value testing were also submitted for chemical testing.

The four samples were tested for soluble chloride, pH, resistivity and soluble sulfate. The pH was basic and ranged from 7.7 to 8.1. The soluble chloride concentration ranged from 0.005 percent to 0.0023 percent and the soluble sulfate ranged from 0.080 percent to 0.002 percent.

The resistivity ranged from 727 ohm-centimeters to 2801 ohm-centimeters.

The soluble sulfate range indicate a severity of exposure to sulfate attack of ACI Class 0, so no special requirements are needed for the cementitious materials used on this project. The soluble chloride values are also do not indicate any problems for either concrete or metal exposed to this soil.

The corrosion potential measurements should be used in helping to determine the type of culvert materials to be used in contact with the soils on this project.
