About this file
This document is a Calibration Standards Specification (CSS) for a Magnification Check Kit (MCK) for the Department of the Navy's Metrology and Calibration (METCAL) Program. The specification details technical requirements for a precision measurement tool designed for calibrating optical comparators at magnifications ranging from 5X to 250X. Key technical specifications include a reticle between 2-6 inches long with 0.02-inch graduations, and a scale at least 8 inches long with 0.1-inch graduations. The MCK must have a combined measurement uncertainty not exceeding ±100 microinches.
The document prescribes strict requirements for equipment components, including material restrictions (no mercury, radioactive materials, or carcinogens), environmental performance (operating at 60°F to 85°F with 20-60% humidity), and durability standards. The kit must withstand random vibration testing and transit drop tests, have a 12-month calibration interval with 85% of units remaining in tolerance, and include an identification plate with specific marking requirements. The NAVAIR METCAL Program Office, Team 3, serves as the Cognizant Design Activity, with maximum use of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components desired.

The equipment will be used to calibrate traditional optical comparators, both horizontal and vertical configurations. For the purpose of this Calibration Standards Specification (CSS), the Magnification Check Kit herein shall be referred to as the MCK.
1.2 Usage. Equipment covered by this CSS is intended for use in controlled environments in which Military equipment is operated. The requirements of this CSS are tailored to the intended use of the equipment.
1.3 Design activity. This MCK product is specific to Navy calibration requirements.
Maximum use of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) items is desired. Should COTS items be unavailable, the overall product design, packaging, and life-cycle configuration management is under the cognizance of the Navy. The Cognizant Design Activity (CDA) for documentation and configuration management shall be the NAVAIR METCAL Program Office, Team 3.
