About this file
This Calibration Standards Specification (CSS) details the minimum requirements for a Vision Measurement System (VMS) for the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) Metrology and Calibration (METCAL) Program. The document specifies technical performance requirements for a precision measurement instrument intended for use in shore-based laboratories to calibrate test instruments with dimensional and/or angular measurement needs. Key technical specifications include horizontal and vertical travel of 8 and 4 inches respectively, 360-degree angle measurement capabilities, accuracy to ±50 micro inches, resolution of 10 micro inches, auto-focus camera functionality, and a fully telecentric optical system.
The VMS must operate on a 120V single-phase power source, have a weight capacity of at least 50 pounds, include accessories like a vise and V-block, and conform to specific environmental and maintenance standards. Critical requirements include a 12-month calibration interval with 85% of units remaining in tolerance, acoustic noise levels under 70 dBA, an automatic diagnostic self-test capability, and design features that facilitate maintenance and repair without removing other components. The specification emphasizes commercial off-the-shelf design with maximum interchangeability and restrictions on materials like mercury, radioactive substances, and certain flammable or explosive materials.
