C21AvionicsUpgrade Request for Information Contractor Questions #4
1. What is the reasoning or requirement behind replacing the current AHC-3000S installed in current a/c..??
Answer:
There are areas of Northern Canada and Greenland outside the Area of Magnetic Unreliability (AMU) where navigation with reference to true north is required. The C-21A is incapable of navigating in these areas with high fidelity. This results in flight over less than optimum routes, fewer divert options in an area of sparse habitation and rapidly changing weather.
By USAF regulations, the C-21A can only fly these procedures during the day, VMC conditions due to lack of true heading source.
