1.0 General Description

1.1 Purpose and Scope

This Interface Control Document (ICD) establishes mechanical interfaces for the Expeditionary Irregular Warfare (EIW) Customized two-piece Hard Container.

Definitions Container The pieces that enclose the material stored inside. Excludes any accessories, including handles, latches, or any other peripherals.

Container assembly The complete assembly that includes the container and all accessories and peripherals.

Corrugation Alternating protruding and recessed sections of the containers faces. Regarded as a feature and must abide by specified maximum external dimensions.

Two-piece construction The container consists of two pieces that can be separated to access the material stored inside, as well as a panel on both the front and rear faces. The two pieces will be referred to as the bottom and top pieces.

Split Line Refers to the dividing line between what would be considered the upper and lower halves of the container.

Maximum rated payload The maximum weight of material that the container assembly can transport while meeting all other requirements. Defined as 195 lb of payload suspended from six internal mounting points using elastomeric shock isolators and 50 lb of payload rigidly mounted to various internal and external regions of the container assembly.

Ready-to-lift configuration The container assembly is arranged as it would be for lifting by hand by four operators. All pieces are assembled and securely latched, the handles arranged to facilitate lifting by hand, and the container assembly is fully loaded to its maximum rated payload.

Transportation configuration The container assembly is arranged as it would be for transportation. All pieces are assembled and securely latched, the handles stowed (if possible) to minimize the external dimensions of the assembly, and fully loaded to its maximum rated payload.

2.0 Mechanical Interfaces

The Cut & Weld hard container has need of custom dimensions that do not come from currently available COTS solutions. They are outlined in the following sections and are illustrated as needed.

2.1 Hard Container Dimensions

The container shall have internal dimensions adhering to 82” Min – 85” Max length x 22.50” + 0.5”/- .12” width x 20.50” + 2.50”/-0.5” height (Threshold = Objective). All containers must be manufactured within +0.25”/-0.25” of their nominal dimensions in all three directions to ensure product interchangeability. The external dimensions of the container assembly (with all features) are not to exceed 86.00” length x 26.00” width x 23.00” height (Threshold). The external height of the interlocking nesting features is excluded from the maximum external height of the container assembly.

Figure 1: Notional depiction of the two-piece container.

The hard container will be of a two-piece construction, with asymmetric top and bottom sections. The bottom section will have an internal depth of 15.50” +0.5”/-0.25”, as measured from the usable bottom inside plane of the container (not from corrugation or nesting features). The container shall not penetrate the inviolable volume as seen in Figure 2 and can be found in the associated GFI document, “NSWCPCD EIW INTERNAL.STEP”. Required corrugation pattern details, specifically flat section space claims and locations are detailed in the following paragraphs. All flat section space claims are to match and coincide with the shock isolator mounting plate surfaces found in the provided STEP file.

2.2 Attachment Points

2.2.1 Internal Attachment Point

The ideal container would provide six unobstructed parallel flat wall sections on the inside of the container at the prescribed locations in Figure 3. Three coplanar sections will be on the left-hand side and three coplanar sections on the right-hand side. These sections shall coincide with a protruding or furthermost extended width of any corrugated patterns on the lower half of the container. The minimum footprint of these required sections is seen below in Figure 3. The minimum height of these flat sections as measured from the container usable bottom plane, would exist between 2.00” and 12.75” inches of height. The lateral width between these left and right coplanar faces shall be 22.50 + .50” / - .12” (Objective). Note that the ideal containers “usable” internal dimension would actually be less than 22.5 as described in section 2.1 because it would allow for mounting on external protrusions. If creating these surfaces using existing products is cost prohibitive any side corrugation pattern is acceptable as long as the containers minimum usable internal width conforms to the minimum usable internal dimensions as described in Section 2.1 (Hard Container Dimensions) (Threshold).

2.2.2 External Attachment Points

The container shall provide an unobstructed recessed flat wall section in any internal or external corrugation pattern on the lower half of the container. This section will be at minimum 6.0” in width and 6.0” height and occur within the first third of the container between a distance of 15.0” and 33.0” from the external leading edge/face on the front of the container, and within 12.00 inches from the bottom of the container. The depth of the recessed sections on the container sides (for both top and bottom halves) shall be between 1.00” and 1.75”in the (red) regions depicted in Figure 4 (Threshold = Objective).

Figure 4: Profile (Side) View of the container with the available region for situating the required footprint and dimensions for the external attachment points.

11 January 2023 viii

2.3 Handles

The container shall have at least two (2) handles attached to both side faces with a minimum total number of four (4) handles (Threshold = Objective). The handles shall be located on the bottom half of the container in recessed areas in order to safeguard them from shearing/damaging forces. Their design shall conform to the requirements found in “EIW Cut & Weld Container Requirements.docx”.

2.4 Access Ports

2.4.1 Top Half, Front & Rear Faces

The container shall have two unobstructed flat wall sections on the front and rear faces of the top half of the container. The minimum dimensions of these flat surfaces shall be 4.0” by 4.0” as depicted in red in Figure 6 below (Threshold). The container shall have one unobstructed flat wall section on the front and rear faces of the top half of the container. The minimum dimensions of this flat surface shall be 4” by 14” as depicted in blue in Figure 6 below (Objective). The minimum and ideal depth of the recessed sections on the front face of the upper half of the container shall be 0.25” relative to the front face (Threshold = Objective). The maximum acceptable depth of the 4.0” square recessed sections on the front face of the upper half of the container shall be 1.75” relative to the front face (Threshold = Objective).

11 January 2023 ix

2.4.2 Bottom Half, Front & Rear Faces

The container shall have unobstructed flat wall sections on the front and rear faces of the bottom half of the container. The objective and threshold dimensions of these flat surfaces shall be identical for the front and rear and can be seen in Figure 6 above or figure 7 below.

Figure 7: Front and rear flat pattern section dimensions (Threshold) on the container’s bottom half.

The ideal dimensions of the front and rear recessed sections are rectangles with minimum dimensions of 11.0” by 17.0” located 3.75” from the bottom plane of usable internal space in the bottom half of the container as depicted in figure 6 (Objective). An alternative flat section configuration is offered in figure

7. The alternative required flat surfaces are coplanar and in the shape of an upside down “U” (shown in red): with a minimum width of 1.5 inches. The minimum internal dimensions of the “U” are 14.0 inches wide and 9.0 inches high (Threshold). Both the front and rear flat sections are to be centered laterally about the container. The depth of the recessed sections on the front and rear faces of the lower half of the container shall be 0.12” to 1.75” relative to the front or rear faces (Threshold = Objective).

2.4.3 Bottom Half, Side Wall

Side face corrugation features adhering to the requirements provided in Section 2.2.2 are acceptable here and have priority within this region.

3.0 Load Cases

The container and all associated design features must be considered with the following load cases and structural strength requirements in mind.

The modified COTS container assembly shall be made from COTS containers and parts which are operational and meet operational performance requirements after exposure to transportation shock and vibration while in the transportation configuration and supporting three container assemblies in the transportation configuration stacked on top of it (Threshold = Objective). Refer to MIL-STD-810H transportation shock and vibration procedures (Method 514.8, Procedure I, Category 4, Composite wheeled vehicle vibration exposure and Method 518.6, Procedure II, Off road transportation shock).

The modified COTS container assembly shall be made from COTS containers and parts that while in the transportation configuration shall be operational after exposure to the transit drop levels from a height of five feet in the orientations described below. Refer to MIL-STD-810H, Method 516.8, Procedure IV for procedures.

o The container assembly will have a 195 lb. payload suspended from the six Internal Attachment Points via elastomeric shock isolator mounts and 50 lb. of additional payload rigidly mounted to the container assembly. The payload experiences a half-sine acceleration impulse with amplitude of 30 G’s and duration of 30 ms.

o Threshold and Objective drop orientations that the container will need to meet. Slap-down refers to the rotational movement of one end after the opposing ends makes initial contact with impact surface.

Drop Orientation Requirement Bottom Face – Flat Down Threshold Front Face – End Down Threshold Rear Face – End Down Threshold Front, Bottom Edge Inclined Up & Slap-down Threshold Rear, Bottom Edge Inclined Up & Slap-down Threshold Left Face – Flat Down Objective Right Face – Flat Down Objective Left, Bottom Edge Inclined Up and Rollover Objective Right, Bottom Edge Inclined Up and Rollover Objective
