IAF Grants in Panama September 5, 2011 Active Grants: 12 Cooperativa de Servicios Múltiples Desarrollo Integral de Gualaca, R.L (COOP), $307,724. COOP will undertake an ecotourism development project to train youths and other community members, generate employment and protect the environment throughout the Gualaca region of the province of Chiriqui. The Grantee will provide training and technical assistance to construct ecotourism infrastructure and address the business and technical components of ecotourism. The project will reach about 100 direct beneficiaries and 100 indirect beneficiaries. (PN-280)

Club Rotario de David (Club Rotario), $180,610. Club Rotario will improve the job skills, housing, and access to water and sanitation of the indigenous population in the Chiriquí portion of the Comarca Ngöbe Buglé. The grantee’s goal is better employment possibilities and living standards for about 500 people. Another 2,500 individuals will benefit indirectly from its activities. (PN-285)

Fundación Biblioteca Nacional de Panamá (FBN), $251,000 over four years. FBN will develop the public library in Tolé, Chiriquí, into a model facility that will serve as a center where 12,000 residents can become involved in cultural events and community projects. The library will offer research and planning activities, reading and literacy programs, opportunities to participate in the recovery of local oral traditions, and training for teachers, community leaders and parents in the use of library resources. Asociación Pro-Artesana Panameña (PROARTESANA), $225,000. PROARTESANA will improve the skills, earnings, self-esteem, cultural pride and market participation of about 300 craftspeople, mostly women, from Panama City, the central provinces, indigenous reserves and other areas. The grantee will provide training and technical assistance to develop techniques and marketing skills so the craftspeople can tap into tourist and other high-end sales outlets, including via the Internet. Asociación Muchachas Guías Panamá (AMGP), $104,500. AMGP will develop young women into entrepreneurs and community leaders and promote civic participation throughout Panama, improving the income and quality of life of 1,000 Panamanians and benefiting another 2,500 indirectly. (PN-291)

Cooperativa de Servicios Múltiples San Antonio de Padua, R.L. (CSAP), $40,000. CSAP will work with farmers during their transition to environmentally responsible production methods. It will build a facility for storage and marketing and will expand the inventory of its general store. (PN-292)

Fundación de Organizaciones Campesinas e Indígenas de Veraguas (FOCIV), $267,000. FOCIV will work with 300 families in 10 indigenous communities in the La Palma municipality of Veraguas to improve food production, protect the watershed through reforestation and further economic initiatives. (PN-293)

Asociación de Puerto Obaldieños Unidos (APOU), $213,790. APOU will work with community residents to develop endeavors in tourism, crop and poultry production, food processing and marketing. It will improve the reliability of the food supply and economic opportunities for 350 Panamanians. Another 350 will benefit indirectly. (PN-295)

Grupo para la Investigación Tecnoecológica y la Conservación (GITEC), $134,155. GITEC will develop its ecotourism services and work with an environmental youth organization in the Montijo region of Veraguas province. (PN-296)

Centro de Investigación y Promoción de los Derechos Humanos (CIPDH), $272,700. CIPDH will work with the Organización de Productores Embera Wounaan de Jaque (OPEWAJ) to diversify agricultural, handicraft and small-livestock production; improve food distribution in the 12 participating communities; and strengthen OPEWAJ’s management. Cooperativa Agropecuaria y Servicios Múltiples Victoriano Lorenzo, R. L. (COPEVILO), $64,150. COPEVILO will increase the incomes of its members and local coffee producers through the purchase, storage and future sale of coffee. It will update old infrastructure, train members in business skills and marketing and diversify its store inventory to improve the local diet. (PN-298)

Artesanías Ocueñas, S.A. (AOSA), $121,200 over two years. AOSA will train approximately 200 women in the province of Herrera to produce embroidered garments, tablecloths and clothing. AOSA will also develop promotional materials, labels and a brand name and manage a working capital fund. (PN-299)
