About this file
This is a Bidder Questions & Answers document for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Forest Resource Division (FRD) Mastication Red Pine Salvage project for Fiscal Year 2026 (RFP# 260000002323). The project involves processing timber harvest debris, specifically red pine salvage material left on-site by previous timber harvesters. Bidders are required to masticate material down to 3 inches in diameter, with any larger wood debris that cannot be adequately masticated to be cut to 4 feet or shorter and left on-site. The solicitation allows for alternative equipment and processing methods, such as woodchippers, provided that the resulting chips or processed material do not exceed 6 inches in depth at any location on the ground.
The document addresses operational specifications for debris management but does not contain information regarding pricing terms, contract duration, award dates, bidder meeting schedules, or funding amounts. The Q&A format indicates this is an ongoing communication mechanism between the State of Michigan and potential bidders to clarify project requirements and expectations prior to bid submission.

Bidder Question Answer (to be completed by the State)
The timber harvesters left a significant amount of large redwood logs on the ground.
It looks like it varies from 6' diameter to 12" diameter logs. Are you expecting this to be masticated and what size material are you looking for to be left?
We expect any material down to 3” in diameter to be masticated. If you leave material on site, it needs to be cut to 4’ or shorter.
If the large wood debris left over from the timber harvest is too large for masticating sufficiently, do you want it ran through a woodchipper, leaving the wood chips scattered on the ground?
If bidders would like to use another piece of equipment to accomplish the objective (i.e., a woodchipper), this is acceptable. However, the resulting chips must be spread out enough so as to not be more than 6” deep in any given location.
