About this file

This document is the Response to Clarifying Questions #2 for Invitation to Bid #2022-12 for the Barton Park Day Use Well Project, which is a state and local contract opportunity involving Clackamas County and Oregon City in Oregon. The bid solicitation requested proposals for the construction of a new well for the Barton Park day use area, with specifications including 8-inch casing down to a depth of 760 feet. The document provides clarification on several technical aspects of the well construction, including the acceptability of using 8-inch casing to the basalt layer at 683 feet and then transitioning to 6-inch casing for the remaining depth. It also addresses questions about the existing booster pump system and required pipe sizes and depths.

The document indicates that the primary concern is maintaining adequate water capacity and recharge rate, which is the reason for the preference for 8-inch casing throughout the well depth. Regarding the booster pump, the existing pump may need to be replaced, and bidders are advised to size the submersible pump based on the required performance metrics of 80+ gpm and 65 psi. The document also provides guidance on the water source for drilling and the required depth for the pitless adapter and feed pipe.

INVITATION TO BID #2022-12

Barton Park Day Use Well Project (“BID”)

RESPONSE TO CLARIFYING QUESTIONS#2

February 17, 2022

Note that these are questions submitted by interested firms to the above referenced solicitation.

The below answers are for clarification purposes only and in no way alter or amend the BID as published.

1. The bid document lists 8” diameter casing with a well depth of 760’. My driller is recommending the 8” casing down to the basalt layer at around 683’ based on the logs and finishing the well with a 6” casing that will be perforated through the water bearing zone down to 760’. So based on the drill logs, and actual ground conditions, the casing would be 8” from ground level to around 683’, and 6” from 683’ to the bottom of the well. Is this and acceptable well construction design? Looks like the existing well was constructed similar to his method.

Answer: The primary reason for wanting 8” casing is for water capacity and recharge rate. Is, a 6” casing for the last 77’ would reduce the storage volume from 201 gallons down to 113 gallons, so it was recommended that we stick with 8” for the full depth.

2. Is it possible to get the make and model of the booster pump in the existing system? We want to be sure to size the submersible pump correctly to the booster pump.

Answer: Upon examining the booster pump for the electrical questions, park staff realized it was not the original pump to the system, and it may need to be changed out.

Please size the submersible pump for the other performance issues (80+ gpm, 65 psi) and advise if the current booster pump will work or what booster would be needed to pair with the submersible pump. That being said, the existing booster pump is a STA-RITE PENTEK HP2, with the following specs:

3. What is the connection size, type and material type to connect to the booster pump system?

Answer: 2” PVC

4. I What size pipe do you want the stub out? And is PVC pipe sufficient for the future expansion?

Answer: 2” PVC

5. A Is there a preferred depth below ground level to install the pitless adapter and run the feed pipe out of the well? Or is county code utility depths sufficient?

Answer: Depth to code should be sufficient, but please recognize that depending on the specific well placement, the feed pipe may be running under a trail or gravel roadway, and should be adequately protected from the associated traffic.

6. Is there a water source on site we are able to access for drilling water? or do we need to get a water permit from the county?

Answer: The nearest water supply is a picnic shelter approximately 300’ away and it only has about 25 psi. It can be utilized, but driller may want to arrange for their own water supply.
