About this file

This is a Question and Answers document addressing UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) battery configuration and runtime capabilities.

The question raised concerns that UPS systems would need to be oversized in parallel configuration to achieve a 480-minute runtime requirement, and presented predictive runtime calculations showing that even with 8 battery cabinet strings, only approximately 343 minutes of runtime could be achieved at 40 kW load. The questioner requested a more realistic runtime specification. The answer provided technical specifications for an alternative configuration: replacing the physical battery setup of an Eaton 9390 40 kVA UPS (1 string × 10 trays × 4 jars = 40 battery jars total) with equivalent lithium-ion modules would deliver 45 to 60 minutes of runtime at 100% load (36 kW). This response indicates the vendor is proposing lithium-ion battery technology as an alternative solution rather than addressing the original request for extended runtime through parallel cabinet expansion.

Question and Answers

Q. The Ups will have to be oversized in most likely in a parallel configuration to significantly increase the runtime.

Doing some predictive math, this is how many battery cabinets are needed to increase that runtime. Not even with 8x batteries we can do 480 mins.

If they can provide a more realistic runtime, that will be the best.

Cabinets/Strings Predicted runtime at 40 kW

5/5 ~214.4 min

6/6 ~257.3 min

7/7 ~300.1 min

8/8 ~343.0 min

A. If you replace the exact physical configuration of the Eaton 9390 40 kVA UPS (1 string × 10 trays × 4 jars = 40 battery jars total) with equivalent lithium-ion (Li-ion) modules.

Load Level (%) kW Load Lithium-Ion (Li-ion) Runtime

100% Load 36 kW 45 to 60 Minutes
