The specification requires a heavy-duty, front-mount snowblower with a 4X4, all-wheel steer chassis capable of clearing 8,500 tons per hour with a 150-foot casting distance. Key technical requirements include a 1,200 horsepower diesel engine, 60,000-pound gross vehicle weight, 120-inch wheelbase, and a forward-mounted cab with left-hand steering. The snowplow must have a 128-inch cutting width and be designed for one-man operation, capable of traveling up to 30 MPH.

The comprehensive specification covers extensive details across multiple systems, including power train, chassis, electrical systems, hydraulics, and snowblower configuration. Notable features include four-wheel steering, advanced diagnostic capabilities, LED lighting, a fully insulated cab with 12" LCD display, and precise requirements for components like the helical ribbon, impeller, and volute. The document specifies warranties (two years for engine, one year for transmission/hydraulics/snowblower), requires comprehensive operator training, and mandates that vendors provide detailed documentation proving compliance with each specification. The snowplow is primarily intended for Yellowstone National Park's annual spring road opening operations.

vi. Clutch engagement selection shall automatically engage ribbon drive in the forward direction.

vii. For safety, the clutch/ribbon engage button shall be illuminated GREEN when activated and the ribbon status icon on the LCD screen will indicate ribbon status as a visual reminder to the operator of the status.

viii. The clutch shall automatically disengage when the engine is shut off to avoid attempts at startup with the blower head engaged.

ix. A two-stage gear reduction system shall be provided between the blower engine and the impeller to provide proper torque and speed at the impeller while allowing the engine to operate at the RPM providing maximum efficiency.

x. The first gear reduction shall be in a gearbox directly downstream from the clutch.

xi. It shall be a single-speed type box, air actuated

xii. Protective shear pin location shall be between these two separately mounted gearboxes.

xiii. Shear plates to be provided by YNP

xiv. The gearboxes shall include helical gears with a pressurized lubrication system and exterior cooling loop system.

xv. Driveline shall be Spicer 1810 Series. Twenty-Five spare sets of shear bolts, including bushings with shoulders, shall be supplied with the unit.

15. Hitch:

a. Attachment assembly shall mount onto the front of the carrier utilizing a quick attach hitch system operated by one person.

b. The blower hitch shall provide low friction, free flotation, shock-absorbing, and weight transfer for the blower head (weight transfer, is required for the proper functioning of the blower).

c. The low friction, free flotation is required independent of blower chassis for vibrations and bounce considerations and to accommodate surface irregularities.

d. A parallel or unequal arm system with a minimum of four horizontal pins shall be used.

e. The pair of hydraulic cylinders shall also “free float and dampen” the parallel arms of the hitch to minimize blower bounce at high vehicle speeds.

f. Lift and Weight Transfer System:

i. The rotary head assembly shall have a hydraulic provision for raising the head from the pavement.

ii. The hydraulic lift mechanism shall be fully operable from the cab.

iii. The rotary head assembly shall automatically lift when the transmission is put into reverse. Must include a switch in cab to turn this feature on/off.

iv. Minimum ground clearance shall be eight inches under the leading edge when the rotary head is at maximum height.

v. Rotary head drive system shall not bind, rub, or vibrate excessively when the head is raised to maximum height and shall be able to travel a minimum of 2-inches below ground level with positive down pressure to clean out surface depressions.

vi. To maximize traction in the work mode, the blower shall be equipped with a weight transfer system that automatically maintains 40-60 percent of the blower head weight on the front axle of the chassis.
