About this file
This document is a Special Packaging Instruction (SPI) form for lithium batteries, issued by Code Ident 80063 under SPI No. AG00000066, with revision R dated drawing date 18059.
The instruction establishes comprehensive packaging, preservation, and transportation requirements for multiple lithium battery types identified by National Stock Numbers (NSNs). Preservation must comply with MIL-STD-2073-1, including noncorrosive insulated terminal protection to prevent damage and short circuiting. Unit packing requires placement of each battery in a close-fitting box conforming to PPP-B-566, ASTM D5118/5118M (Type CF, Class domestic), or PPP-B-676 (Type I), followed by placement in a polyethylene bag conforming to A-A-3174 (Type I, Class 1, Grade B, minimum 4.0 +/- 0.5 mils thickness) with heat sealing. Intermediate packing consolidates unit-packed batteries in quantities specified in Table I within close-fitting boxes conforming to ASTM D5118/5118M (Type CF, Domestic, W5C), closed per ASTM D1974 using hot melt methods 2A1 or 2A2. Marking must comply with MIL-STD-129 and include manufacture dates (MFD code from battery label per MIL-PRF-32271 or MIL-PRF-32052). Only batteries with identical manufacture dates may be consolidated in the same container. Interior boxes containing nonrechargeable batteries require a warning prohibiting charging, short circuiting, incineration, or mutilation; boxes containing rechargeable batteries require warnings against storage above 120°F, crushing, mutilation, polarity reversal, disassembly, or incineration. All hazardous material batteries must comply with DOT CFR Title 49, IMDG Code, IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, and AFMAN 24-204/TM 38-250. Wood packaging material for CONUS and OCONUS shipments must meet ISPM-15 standards. Table I specifies unit pack quantities and shipper box quantities for 25 battery types ranging from single-unit to 64-unit packs per shipper box.
