All Douglas fir shall have a maximum grain slope of 1:18 and a moisture content less than 12%. Douglas fir shall be free of loose knots, pitch pockets, and sap wood. Douglas fir shall meet AITC visual grading standard L2 for laminated timbers. Douglas fir shall have a density of not greater than 32 lb/cu.ft.
Douglas fir used for deck planking shall be free of knots on the exposed surface. The top layer of deck planking shall be quarter sawn such that the exposed grain is close and vertical for least wear.
Douglas fir used for bulkhead stiffeners shall be clear, straight grain, select structural quality.
2.0 WOOD - OAK
White oak shall be used for certain exposed members in the 'tween deck area for traditional appearance. These members shall include deck beams, clamps, ceiling, spirketing plank, waterway, hatch coamings, hatch gratings, and simulated frames.
White oak shall be structural quality with straight grain, no large knots, no loose knots, at least 90% heartwood. Oak shall be air dried for at least six months with a density not greater than
48 lb/cu.ft.
3.0 WOOD - KNEES & BREASTHOOK
Lodging and hanging knees and breasthook shall be white oak, red oak, or live oak. Knees shall be one piece with naturally grown grain
SAMA-188C 02010-2
conforming to the shape of the knee. Knees shall be air dried for at least six months with a density not greater than
55 lb./cu.ft.
SAMA-188C 02010-3
4.0 PLYWOOD
Plywood shall be used in the hull structure for bulkhead planking, deck planking, and transom planking.
All plywood used as part of the hull structure shall be of fir construction with exterior glue and solid interior plies. Surface plies shall be Grade B or better. Plywood shall meet APA requirements for marine plywood.
5.0 RESORCINOL GLUE
All structural pieces that are laminated under controlled temperature and pressure shop conditions shall be bonded with resorcinol or epoxy glues.
Resorcinol glue shall be a phenol resorcinol resin meeting the requirements of ANSI/AITC A-190.1-1992.
Resorcinol glue shall be used in strict accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.
6.0 EPOXY GLUE
All structural pieces that are laminated under controlled temperature and pressure shop conditions shall be bonded with resorcinol or epoxy glues.
All hull planking, deck planking, transom planking, and all other field joints shall be bonded with epoxy.
Epoxy shall have the following properties:
Potlife (100 g @ 72 degrees Fahrenheit) 21.5 minutes
Specific gravity - cured 1.18
Hardness (Shore D) two weeks 83
Tensile strength 7320 psi
Tensile modulus 4.6 x 10
Flexural strength 11,810
Flexural modulus 4.5 x 10
SAMA-188C 02010-4
The epoxy shall be Gougeon Brothers, Inc., Bay City, MI, West 105/206 or approved equal.
Epoxy glue shall be used in strict accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations.
Any fillers used to increase viscosity or for gap filling shall be as recommended by the epoxy manufacturer.
7.0 BEDDING COMPOUND
Bedding compound, where specified herein and on the drawings, shall be a polyurethane adhesive/sealant designed for use above or below the waterline. It shall become tack free in 48 hours and shall cure in
5-7 days with no shrinkage.
Bedding compound shall have the following characteristics:
Shear strength (fir plywood specimen) 460 psi (7 day cure)
Tensile strength 275 psi
Elongation 350%
Bedding compound shall be 3M, 3M Center, St. Paul, MN, Marine 5200
Adhesive/Sealant or approved equal.
Bedding compound shall generally be black to simulate tar unless otherwise specified. Bedding compound shall be used in strict accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations.
In certain locations bedding has been specified where a part must be removeable and bond strength is not important. In those locations an alternative product shall be used. The alternative product shall be
Sika Corp., Kansas City, MO, Sikaflex 241 or equal.
8.0 SEAM COMPOUND
Deck plank seams on the main and 'tween decks shall be payed with black seam compound installed to simulate poured in tar. The seam compound shall be a two part, pourable, Thiokol LP polysulfide polymer based product designed to resist oil, saltwater, weather, and aging. The
SAMA-188C 02010-5
seam compound shall be BoatLIFE, Inc., Old Bethpage, NY, Life-Calk or approved equal.
Seam compound shall be installed in strict accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations.

Drifts shall be 3/4" diameter mild steel, AISI M1010 or M1020. Rounded heads of 1-1/4" - 1-1/2" diameter shall be forged on the drifts. The drifts shall not be galvanized to show some traditional rust in an interior, non-structural application.
14.0 TRUNNELS
Trunnels, where used to fasten scarfed joints, shall be turned from locust. Trunnels shall be sized for a snug fit in drilled holes and set in epoxy glue.
Simulated trunnels shall be short pieces of locust sized for a snug fit in the holes for the bolts that are being concealed. Simulated trunnels shall be secured with epoxy glue.
15.0 STRUCTURAL STEEL
Structural steel hull components such as deck to frame brackets, 'tween deck beam brackets, and floors on each frame shall be fabricated from
