RE: MOJA Landmark Sign Schematic Design
Introduction This memo serves to document the schematic design efforts for a series of proposed Landmark Signs to be located throughout Mojave National Preserve.
Over the last several months DSC-T, MOJA and FLH have had reviewed a variety of concepts presented by DSC-T for the placement of a new roadside sign intended to help facilitate an organized and logical welcome and orientation experience for visitors entering the Preserve on Cima Road. The Landmark sign is intended to be placed roadside and should be legible from a moving vehicle. After several rounds of team discussion and accepting a design preference as provided by the MOJA Superintendent, Schematic Option “F” was chosen as the basis for design development.
Discussion occurred that the proposed Landmark Signs would be appropriate to locate throughout the preserve to help welcome and orient visitors in a consistent manner.

1. To construct a single -or- several Landmark Signs, it is recommended that a SOW be prepared, and a Task Order issued, for the completion of a 100% PS&E package qualified professional with previous experience in the design, detailing, and cost estimation of similar projects.
2. MOJA initiated (fabrication by contract) of applicable government provided components including emblems, pre-cast concrete elements, and sign panels will be required prior any construction activities.
3. Using the 100% PSE in conjunction with the sign plan, implementation could occur via a construction contract. Construction activities would include excavation for poured in place concrete footing, associated site work and assembly and attachment of all the various components.
Design Concept The concept for the Landmark Sign is to match a portion of the existing monument sign, of which there are several throughout the Preserve. The existing monument signs are documented in a construction drawing dated 1997 (97 Plans).

Key Concrete Structure - As per the original 97 plans, concrete work for the above ground portion of the sign may be architectural pre-cast concrete and match the detailing and tinting as explained in the plan set.
1. Lettering – Lettering for “Mojave National Preserve” can be affixed to the concrete structure in this location. Match existing monument sign. Size TBD.
2. Emblems - The MOJA Joshua Tree -or- NPS Arrowhead can be affixed to the sign base. Placement and construction to match existing monument sign.
3. Sign Panel – Routed Wood or Phenolic Resin are two good choices to evaluate further. The method of attachment to the vertical member should be tamper proof and account for high winds. Legible text on the sign panel from a moving vehicle is a necessity for the suite of place names proposed for demarcation throughout the preserve.
4. Vertical member – Could be wood or metal. Care should be taken to ensure that the method of attachment will not compromise the integrity or aesthetic of the concrete base. The vertical member should be able to withstand wind and weather and petty vandalism. The exact design and load bearing of the vertical member loaded with a sign panel should be evaluated for suitability in high wind events and compatibility with the integrity of the pre cast concrete. Using a custom designed and fabricated bracket may be a suitable method of attachment.
5. Concrete Structure – Match existing monument sign. Concrete work for the above ground portion of the sign may be architectural pre-cast concrete and should match the exact detailing and tinting as explained in the 97 Plan Set. The total height of the structure shall be roughly 6’ tall. On one side, the sign shall taper for the entire height at the angles as shown in the plan set.
The other side shall have no taper and be perpendicular at both top and bottom. Minor adjustments in the design will be required on the non-angled side to allow it to stand alone and attach the vertical member.
6. Structural Footing, Site Work, and Revegetation - The footing for the sign structure can borrow design intent from the 97 Plan Set and should be designed for this specific application. Minor site work around the base of the sign will be required. Proper drainage and grading away from the base of the sign will be beneficial. It is recommended that revegetation occurs in the area of disturbance.
