SCOPE OF WORK

SAN FRANCISCO MARITIME NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK

AQUATIC PARK BATHHOUSE

MURAL MAINTENANCE – SECOND FLOOR

JANUARY 29,2024

I. BACKGROUND

San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park’s (SAFR) Aquatic Park Bathhouse is a contributing structure to the Aquatic Park Historic District. The Bathhouse is decorated with extensive wall murals on multiple floors, in multiple rooms and exterior locations.

The National Park Service (NPS) maintains an ongoing, yearly maintenance program for the murals.

The second floor lobby murals have undergone extensive restoration and conservation, removing years of grime and repairing plaster, canvas and paint damage. The scope for those conservation projects included providing recommendations for ongoing maintenance and care of the murals. Those recommendations include regular examination, cleaning, maintenance, repainting and other repairs. The second floor exterior veranda murals have yet to undergo cleaning and treatment but are known to have detached tiles.

II. OBJECTIVE

The objective for this project is to hire an art conservator to conduct an examination of a limited selection of the murals, cleaning of same murals, limited cosmetic touch-ups, re-adhering of approximately 30 square feet of loose tiles and documenting in a treatment report the work conducted and any observed needed repairs that are beyond the scope of this project. Any work beyond the scope of work must be evaluated and approved by the Contracting Officer. Any work conducted without the approval of the Contracting Officer is at the risk of the Contractor.

III. SCOPE

This project is to examine, dust/clean, treat and report on the condition of murals in the following locations:

• Main Lobby; second floor of the Bathhouse – walls only, approximately 2,000 square feet of oil paint mural on canvas on plaster substrate. Ceiling height is approximately 15’-9”.

• Veranda, second floor of the Bathhouse - walls only, approximately 1,750 square feet of glazed ceramic tile. Ceiling height is approximately 15’-9”.

g) Although sections of the mural can be accessed by ladder or a rolling “painters” scaffold, the two stairwells (18’x 7’) will likely require a professional scaffolding installation (see attached document “Drawings and Photographs Mural Maintenance 2024” for location). The scaffolding and work will need to be phased to allow public access to at least one stairwell at a time.
