Cranes 62 and 65 Design Services for Construction Documents
Crane Inventory - Draft
WJE PROJECT NO. 2017.3665.1
IDIQ CONTRACT
NO.
P15PC00035, Task Order 140P2019F0148, PMIS No. BOST - 163343
TO Mark Wagner, DBB
FROM David Schnerch
As part of the repair design scope for the two 1940s American Hoist & Derrick American Revolver R-15 gantry cranes, Crane 62 and 65, located at the Charlestown Navy Yard, WJE performed a survey of salvaged components from an identical demolished crane. The identical crane was demolished in 2014 by the Navy and remaining salvaged parts are stored behind Building 10 at the Charlestown Navy Yard. WJE performed the survey on September 10, 2019 and identified the following components:
Item Identified Quantity Technical Part Name Part Number Figure Numbers
Hook Assembly (Timken Roller
Brg. Type, 20 ton capacity)
1 3 1/2 inch Swivel Hook 36483

There is no hook and double block assembly currently installed on Crane 65. Similarly, the two gantry ladders are not installed on Crane 65. These salvaged elements could be used for Crane 65, but there are inherent safety issues with both given that the hook may be a fall hazard and the ladders if not properly locked allow access to the car body.
Elements of the trucks are damaged or missing on both Crane 65 and 62 and those elements could be salvaged from the truck assemblies from the dismantled crane. The capacity chart is in place on Crane 62, but is in poor condition and on Crane 65 there is no capacity chart. The two salvaged charts could be installed or used to restore the existing chart on Crane 62.
