About this file

This Planning Memorandum provides detailed scaffolding requirements for the AEGIS Radar SPY Antenna Array Resurfacing Project on CG-52 and DDG-51 class naval ships. The specifications mandate a three-level scaffolding structure with precise configurations, including a minimum 18" clearance from antenna edges, encapsulation with a slanted top to allow water runoff, and specific plank positioning 6" to 11" from the antenna face. For Destroyer ships, the scaffolding top must have metal planks or fire-retardant plywood to protect the array and personnel, while Cruiser ships can use the top access level for protection.

Additional requirements include a minimum 80-square-foot mixing/cleaning room near each array, which must be encapsulated and connected to the scaffolding. For Cruiser ships, a single mixing room can support two adjacent antennas, with top-level access. The scaffolding must be free of contaminants like plaster or cement, and include clean plastic zippered doors at each entrance point. The document provides multiple reference figures detailing scaffolding configurations for different ship types and array locations, with specific measurements and placement guidelines to ensure proper installation and maintenance of the AEGIS Radar arrays.

PURPOSE: To provide scaffolding requirements for Antenna Array Resurfacing Project, or cleaning and repairing damaged antenna windows, bolt caps, foundation weather seal.

REQUIREMENT: Scaffolding shall be constructed with 3 levels as shown in Figure 1.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR RESURFACING PROJECT:

1. Scaffolding frame member shall have a minimum of 18” clearance from the edges of the antenna as shown in Figure 1.

2. Encapsulation shall be constructed as shown in Figure 1 and 2. Slant on the top for the water to run away from the array face. For Destroyer ships (DDGs), the scaffolding top shall have metal planks or fire retardant treated plywood to protect the array and personnel from any falling objects. As for Cruiser ships (CGs) the top access level can provide the needed protection for the three levels below it.

3. Planks that cross the antenna face shall be from 6” to 11” from the face as shown in Figure 2.

4. Scaffolding shall be free of contaminates such as plaster, stucco, or cement.

5. Scaffolding shall include a minimum of 80 square feet mixing/cleaning room close to each array, area shall be encapsulated and tied into array scaffolding enclosure. For Cruiser ships (CGs), a mixing room can be used to support two adjacent antennas and the access shall be from the top level. See Figure 3 thru Figure 6 for reference.

6. Refer to Figure 7 thru Figure 14 for additional reference.

7. Clean plastic zippered door for each entrance point for each array and each mixing/cleaning room scaffolding.

8. Refer to Industrial Support Services (ISS) for additional requirements of the
