About this file

This document is a PowerPoint slide deck from Tucson Water detailing the Advanced Water Purification (AWP) Demonstration Facility project in Tucson, Arizona. The project involves constructing a 2.5 MGD Advanced Water Purification Facility (AWPF) at the Agua Nueva site, with a demonstration facility at the Tres Rios location designed to verify treatment performance, support operator training, and serve as a community engagement center. The project includes three primary construction tasks: developing a public tour entrance and visitor center, installing advanced treatment equipment in an existing filter building, and improving the parking lot and site infrastructure. The facility will use a reverse osmosis (RO)-based treatment train and is scheduled for completion by 2031, with construction potentially beginning earlier than the proposed date. A site visit is scheduled for October 2, 2025, at 2550 W. Sweetwater Drive in Tucson.

Tucson Water received federal funding for the project in 2024 and is seeking a construction manager at risk (CMAR) to execute the development. The demonstration facility will comply with Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) AWP rules and guidelines, transitioning from groundwater reliance to a diverse renewable water supply portfolio. The project aligns with the One Water 2100 Plan, which prioritizes purifying recycled water to drinking water standards. Treatment equipment, including pilot skids for membrane filtration/ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, UV-AOP, and granular activated carbon, will be pre-packaged and potentially purchased in-house, with an estimated one-year procurement timeline.
