About this file
This document provides graphic design standards and guidelines for 2D animation projects for the National Park Service. It outlines a preferred flat vector art style that utilizes visual hierarchy, color theory, and abstract or silhouetted designs to communicate historical stories in a way that prevents having to accurately depict people, places, and events. Examples are provided of both acceptable and non-preferred animation styles. Specific scene transitions and examples of incorporating subtext and visual humor into storytelling are highlighted. The related federal contract opportunity is for an interpretive film under solicitation number 140P2123R0041 being offered by the Department of the Interior National Park Service.

This document is designed as a reference for 2D graphical standards. When approaching 2-D animation, it’s important to adhere to these best practices:
· While animations can be useful for explaining complex details, we prefer to start from a place of interpretation using the graphical elements for enhanced storytelling.
· Animations should not simply illustrate what is being spoken. Instead, the visuals and spoken narrative should relate but the visuals should add value by showing concepts and ideas that extend beyond the spoken words.
· The “explainer video” style is not where we want to position most NPS products.
· The look can be created by the designer and art director, but the visual approach should utilize design best practices: like visual hierarchy, color theory, and interesting sound design.
· The vector art should clearly communicate the story but also retain some level of abstractness.
· For example, use of silhouette (or other creative concealments) should prevent the need to design the exact look of historical figures, locations, or details that are challenging to accurately design.
· Work should also provide subtext and meaning that is scalable for different aged audiences.
2D Animation – Flat Vector Art Style
Example 1: Refer to this example: https://vimeo.com/364052754 for design intended for motion. Given the historical genre of many NPS projects, leaning into the abstract, may prevent having to create accurate renditions of people, places, and events.
Example 2 & 3 (non-examples): We are not looking for a style of design that is character-driven like this: https://vimeo.com/664245536 We are also not looking for a didactic style like this https://vimeo.com/191699730
Example 4: Refer to this reference https://vimeo.com/400522741 for scene transitions and connections. There are transitions at 00:44 and 00:55 that show attention to detail and planning which helps scenes flow smoothly. Also see the subtext or symbolism at 1:19 that provides subtext and story info that scales for different aged audiences. A child may not understand, but an adult may get the significance of “walking in two worlds.”
Example 5: Refer to this reference https://vimeo.com/140767141 to see examples of visual humor and sound that keep the storytelling light.
