STAND DESCRIPTION

These stands are mature northern hardwood stands with varying amounts of eastern hemlock mixed in. These stands are fairly diverse in species composition. Sugar maple, northern red oak, white ash, and American basswood occur commonly throughout the stands. Scattered yellow birch and red maple also occur across these stands. There may also be an occasional quaking aspen. PU1, PU2, PU3, PU4, and PU10 contain more eastern hemlock than the other units. There are many big trees throughout these stands with large crowns, including several oaks, sugar maples, and hemlocks greater than 20”+. These stands are heavy in sawtimber volume.

However, there are several areas within the stands with more pole-sized hardwoods.

There is minimal existing regeneration in the understories of these stands, except for some ironwood regeneration occurring sporadically throughout. There is strong evidence of deer activity throughout these stands, likely contributing heavy browse pressure onto regeneration and limiting its ability to successfully develop into larger size classes. This area seems to be a winter deer yard. Stand densities are variable, but generally range between 130 - 180 ft2/acre BA. The DBH range runs from 6” – 28”, and the average DBH is ~15”.

Soils are well-drained and range in texture from sandy to coarse-loamy.

NEPA DECISION DOCUMENT: Pori Junction EA TIMBER SALE: Turnout PU: 1-7, 9, 10

DESIRED CONDITION

The desired conditions are uneven-aged northern hardwood stands with the current species diversity maintained or enhanced. The future stand should contain considerable percentages of oak, white ash, and basswood.

Regenerating a new age class that contains these mid-tolerant species, as well as sugar maple, and is free-to-grow from browse pressure is also desired.

SHORT AND LONG TERM OBJECTIVES

The short term objective is to regenerate of a new age class to perpetuate the uneven-aged structure by creating canopy gaps from the removal of individual or groups of trees. The current species diversity should be maintained or increased by favoring species other than sugar maple. With these stands containing high amounts of mid-tolerants like northern red oak, white ash, and basswood, an objective would be to create large enough canopy gaps to promote their regeneration. Creating large regeneration gaps will also distribute deer browsing pressure, increasing chances for seedling survival and growth.

The long term objective is maintain a healthy uneven-aged northern hardwood stand that is diverse in both species composition and structure.

REMARKS

These stands have heavy deer pressure and likely are a winter deer yard. Regeneration of new age class may be inhibited by deer browse.

There may be scattered, small, poorly drained pockets, seeps, steep slopes, perched water tables, or shallow bedrock areas; do not designate any trees for removal in these areas.

This prescription was written to allow flexibility to the timber marker on the ground for achieving the objective with the variety in the area. Always manage for the best tree in place. If you have questions, please contact the Kenton RD Silviculturist.

MARKING GUIDE:

Name of Treatment - Selection Harvest (4151) Residual BA/Ac: 70-80 ft2 Acres - see above Canopy gaps should be created by removing large trees or groups of smaller trees to create favorable conditions for the regeneration of northern hardwoods. Canopy gaps should be approximately 70’-100’ in diameter. There is a good mix of size classes in most stands, with a heavy concentration in the 14”-16” range. Try to maintain the diversity in size classes while focusing on removing high risk trees. Trees with poor form or poor health should be marked for removal. Most trees over 24” should be marked for removal unless it is cull or has wildlife value.

Where large trees are selected for removal, mark enough smaller trees to create drop zones for the large trees.

Generally, only select oak and hemlock for removal to allow for equipment operability and drop zones. Prioritize removing poor form or poor health trees. Select against sugar maple to increase diversity within the stand. Focus on leaving good quality crop trees with good form and improving their growing conditions, especially in the pole-heavy sections of the stand. Favor healthy oak, white ash, basswood, yellow birch, and eastern hemlock for retention. The target residual basal area for this stand is 70-80 ft2/acre. In areas that are heavier to hemlock, leave the residual BA a little higher.

In portions of the stand that have higher concentrations of oak and white ash, mark the stand a little heavier to a residual BA of 60-70 ft2 to promote regeneration of these mid-tolerant species. If necessary to achieve BA target and create canopy gaps, cut a few oak or white ash. Try to institute more small group selection in these areas. If any mature aspen clones are encountered in the stand, favor the regeneration of the aspen clone over the hardwoods by removing all the overstory (clearcut) in that area.

DESIGN CRITERIA AND MITIGATION MEASURES

Highlighted Design Criteria, see NEPA for all of the criteria Cull trees should be left for wildlife, do not remove trees with little or no value unless they pose an insect or disease threat to the stand (14). If cull trees need to be marked the silviculturist should be notified to look at the risk.

If any stick nests are found (20) the wildlife biologist should be consulted.

If any archaeological sites are located during layout or implementation the Archaeologist should be consulted (66).

Winter or Dry Summer (August-September) for most of the units.

Treat aspen inclusions in other forest type to favor aspen (5).

Remove all merchantable ironwood (8) Remove all white spruce 10 inches and greater (9)

STAND DESCRIPTION

PU8 is an uneven-aged northern hardwood stand with a substantial amount of eastern hemlock, differentiating it from the other units in this sale. The stand ranges from hemlock-dominated areas to a broader mix of hardwoods and hemlock. Like the other units, PU8 is diverse in species composition. The stand is composed of sugar maple, eastern hemlock, northern red oak, American basswood, and white ash, with scattered amounts of red maple, yellow birch, paper birch, and ironwood. An occasional aspen occurs across the unit. There are many big trees throughout PU8 with large crowns, including several oaks, sugar maples, and hemlocks greater than 20”+. There are several areas within the stand with more pole-sized hardwoods.

Stand densities are high, ranging between 160-250 ft2/acre BA. The average BA is ~210 ft2/acre. The diameter range is 6”-28”, with an average DBH of 15”.

Like the other units, there is minimal existing regeneration in the understories of PU8. There is strong evidence of deer activity and deer browse throughout the stand which likely negatively impacts natural regeneration success.

Along the western edge of PU8, an area of younger hemlock (6-10”) mixed with paper birch poles occurs.

DESIRED CONDITION

The desired condition is an uneven-aged northern hardwood stand with the current species diversity maintained or enhanced.

The future stand should contain considerable percentages of oak, white ash, and basswood, in addition to featuring the eastern hemlock already composing a significant portion of the stand.

Another objective is to thin the hemlock-paper birch dominated section in the western portion of the stand to redistribute growing space to the residual stand, allowing it to increase in vigor and improve the growth of the paper birch.

OTTAWA NATIONAL FOREST

SILVICULTURAL PRESCRIPTION / MARKING GUIDES

Name of Treatment - Selection Harvest (4151) Residual BA/Ac: 130-140 ft2 Acres - 67 Thin the hemlock down by no more than 30% of current basal area to a variable basal area target of 130-140 ft2/acre. In areas that are heavier to hemlock, leave the residual basal area higher. Younger, healthy hemlocks in the understory should be partially released from competition by removing overtopping trees on one to two sides of the hemlock’s crown. Healthy hemlocks with full crowns across all size classes should be retained. Try to maintain diversity across size classes. Prioritize hemlocks for removal based on poor form and poor health to achieve the residual basal area target. Some hemlocks over 20 inches should be removed, but not all. In areas of the stand that have a heavier hardwood component and less hemlock, the residual basal area should be left lower (70-80 ft2/acre) to regenerate a new age class of hardwoods. Most hardwood trees over 24 inches should be removed unless its cull or has wildlife value. Be sure to mark enough trees to create drop zones for large trees selected to removal. Any unique species in the stand, such as yellow birch, white ash, white pine, and basswood should be retained if healthy and feasible.

Portions of PU8 have higher concentrations of sugar-maple dominated northern hardwoods. In these areas, aim for a residual basal area target of 70-80 ft2/acre to try to regenerate a new age class of hardwoods. Select against sugar maple and try to promote species diversity and development across all size classes.

In the pole-size hemlock/paper birch are in the western edge of stand, take a light row thinning approach. Try to establish perpendicular rows by removing strips of tress running east to west upslope approximately every 30 feet.

Try to favor paper birch over eastern hemlock for retention here. I estimate this area to be ~5 – 10 acres in size.

1/ In Timber Sale Contracts, all hardwood sawlogs will use 50% minimum net scale in gross %, due to limitations in TIM. Cruising will use 95% minimum net scale for small diameter logs (9.6 – 11.5 DIB).

2/ Seventy percent applies to rot, voids, and char. Mechanical type defects such as sweep, crook, spider heart, and ring shake will not be considered.

Reasonably straight - When the true line of a minimum length piece does not deviate more than ½ the inside diameter of the small and plus two inches from a straight line drawn between the centers of the ends of a piece.

The maximum deflection allowed is what will fit in a 20-inch cylinder.

A minimum tree must include at least one piece that meets minimum specifications.

** Product heights are now measured to the nearest foot. All heights are measured in feet from the ground on the high side of the stump.

1. Conifers – measure total height (to the tip) in feet and the cruise program will calculate the 4” cut-off.

2. Hardwoods (includes Aspen) – measure the height in feet to the 4” top.

3. Sawtimber – cut-off point or “stoppers” will follow our regular practices. Measure sawtimber height in feet. Secondary product height will be measured as described in item 1 or 2 depending on the species.

4. Default dib’s are already built into the equations;

Pulpwood = 4.0” Sawtimber = 9.6” (hardwood) = 7.6” (mixed conifers, pine)

5. On trees with a broken, dead, or deformed top, record the height to the point where the 4” top or the tip would have been if the tree were still growing normally, then record defect to account for the missing volume.
