About this file
This is a technical specification document detailing the requirements for scintillating fibers to be used in the Barrel Imaging Calorimeter (BIC) of the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) being built at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The document, designated EIC-DET-SPC-017 Revision 04, was signed on December 3-4, 2024 and has a Quality Classification of A-3.
The specification outlines critical technical requirements including: light yield greater than 3.5 photoelectrons measured using a bialkali photomultiplier tube, fiber diameter of 1.00 ±0.01 mm with RMS ≤0.02 mm, attenuation length for blue light >4m, batch-to-batch variation limits of <15% for light yield and <10% for attenuation length, emission spectrum in blue-green light, scintillation decay time <3ns, and total length requirement of 4900 km with delivery in 4.55m ±0.01m canes. The document encourages vendors to offer multiple fiber options with higher light yield and longer attenuation length using advanced technologies like multi-clad technology, acknowledging this may result in higher costs. A verification process is specified requiring comparison to "standard reference fibers" for quality control.

Technical Specification for the Scintillating Fibers for the Barrel Imaging Calorimeter
1 BACKGROUND
The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) is a Nuclear Physics facility being built at the United States (U.S).
Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). The EIC will create intense beams of relativistic energy electrons and ions in opposing particle storage rings that will be brought into collision in a large experimental detector. This will provide insight into the internal structure of protons and neutrons and the gluelike force that holds them together.
1.1 Background
The EIC Project includes one interaction region, with an allowance for a second, and one detector. The EIC detector is being designed as a hermetic, general-purpose detector. It will be an approximately 10-meter-long cylindrical barrel detector with additional instrumentation that extends to up to 45m in each direction down the EIC beamline. It will use cutting-edge technologies to detect particles created in collisions between high energy electrons and protons or heavy ions (the nuclei of larger atoms) moving close to the speed of light. It will be based on a 1.7 Tesla superconducting magnet for curving the trajectories of charged particles created in these collisions and will include high precision tracking and particle identification systems to measure and identify charged particles, electromagnetic calorimeters to measure and identify electromagnetic particles, and hadronic calorimeters to allow for high precision jet (a collimated spray of particles) measurements.
Scintillating fibers are one of the components of the Barrel Imaging electromagnetic Calorimeter (BIC), one of the subsystems of the EIC detector. They will be glued to corrugated lead sheets (absorber) and will serve to convert the energy of the secondary particles generated in the absorber into light, subsequently detected by photo sensors.

3 REQUIREMENTS
3.1 Technical/Performance Characteristics
A. Light yield: the average response to a Sr-90 source shall be greater than 3.5 photoelectrons measured using a bialkali photomultiplier tube (e.g. Hamamatsu R329-02 or similar) 200 cm from the source, and the opposite end blackened (or assessed via other methods mutually acceptable to the BSA and Contractor).
B. Diameter mean value and variation shall be 1.00 +/- 0.01 mm, RMS ≤0.02 mm.
C. Attenuation length for blue light > 4m.
D. Batch to batch or lot to lot variation of light yield <15%.
E. Batch to batch or lot to lot variation of attenuation length <10%.
F. Emission spectrum in blue-green light G. Scintillation decay time <3ns H. Total length 4900 km I. Delivery method in canes. Length of fibers 4.55 meters +/- 0.01m.
3.2 Higher Light Yield and Higher Attenuation Length Options
With the fiber mechanical properties being within the requirements, the performance of the barrel calorimeter is majorly defined by Light Yield and light Attenuation Length with minimally accepted requirements defined in section 3.1. It is strongly preferred to utilize fibers with higher Light Yield and longer Attenuation Length, which may require more advanced production technologies (e.g. multi-clad technology) and consequently may result in higher cost. The Contractor is encouraged to offer more than one fiber options, with the list of specifications for each option.
3.3 Environment, Safety and Health
Identification of hazards, and their mitigation, during all stages of the life of the Equipment including; installation, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and repair. Identification of means to eliminate or manage each hazard shall be provided based on the following hierarchy:
• Eliminate the hazard, or
• Substitute with something less hazardous, or
• Engineer – mitigate the severity of the hazard, or
• User Personal Protective Equipment (least desirable).

4 VERIFICATION
Appropriate inspection/tests shall be performed to ensure fibers conform to all requirements in section 3 of this specification. As a practical matter, the light output will be determined in comparison to average light yield of a set of "standard reference fibers" with an agreed upon light yield to which all subsequent production batches will be compared. BSA will measure the absolute photon yield (section 3.1) to verify that the standard reference fibers meet the specification for absolute light yield.
