Mainland Museum – Cumberland Island

Mainland Museum Exhibits: The museum has three gallery spaces and a connecting hallway. The first gallery is to the right as you enter the door and walk through the lobby. It covers content by era from the Native residents, Spanish, British occupation, colonial land owners to planters who enslaved West Africans to grow Sea Island Cotton, to the era of industrialists looking to escape city life but live as they did in the city. Text is displayed on foamcore and hung on the walls. Items are displayed on walls or in display cases. There is one large trapezoid structure that replicates the inside of a church located on the island. There are two large pieces of commissioned artwork in this gallery space.

The second gallery space represents the Carnegie family and how they used transportation to arrive at the island and around the island. It also shows a bit of the lifestyle of the family while there with a replicated business office, the rose garden, a dining set, and models of the homes they built.

The hallway is a transition area between gallery spaces with the women's restroom 3/4 way down the hall if walking from the carriage room to the lobby.

The third gallery space is dedicated to the War of 1812, the use of Cumberland Island as headquarters for the British and the British invasion of St. Marys. There are artifact display cases, uniforms of the Royal Marines, and replica food and supply items that pre-Covid could be touched. This room also has a 6-minute video about archeology.
