About this file
This Statement of Work (SOW) details Oak Ridge National Laboratory's (ORNL) requirements for a Laser Powder Directed Energy Deposition (LP-DED) additive manufacturing system. The system must feature a Ytterbium Fiber Laser Beam with variable power up to 700W, a beam diameter of 400 µm or less, and a build volume of 150 mm x 150 mm x 150 mm. Key specifications include a purge system achieving 50 ppm O2, capability to handle 5 independent powder feeders, control software for material mixing during printing, a footprint under 1.5 m x 1.5 m, weight under 500 kg, and 220V single-phase power.
The timeline requires delivery within 5 months, with the seller responsible for installation, site acceptance testing, electrical documentation, on-site equipment training, and an optional service contract. The system is designed for small-scale processing of high-temperature materials in an inert environment, with multi-material delivery control and the ability to build specimens using small amounts of metal powder. The SOW emphasizes specific technical capabilities and performance requirements for a research and development LP-DED system.

Statement of Work
Laser Powder Directed Energy Deposition System
October 22, 2025
Background and Scope of Work
ORNL is looking to expand their capabilities in Laser Powder Directed Energy Deposition (LP – DED) additive manufacturing. The necessary system specifications are listed below. An adequate LP – DED system will allow for small scale processing of high temperature materials in an inert environment (low oxygen content allowed). The system will allow for multi material delivery control as a function of layer height / number. The system will require small amounts of metal powder in order to build specimens.
The system will also conform to space and weight requirements listed below.
Certain non-negotiable features as well as further stretch goals have been identified for the Small- Scale R&D LP – DED system. The required machine shall meet the following specifications:
Specifications:
Power Source: Ytterbium Fiber Laser Beam Beam Power: Variable up to 700 W Beam Diameter: 400 µm or less Build volume size: no larger than 150 mm x 150 mm x 150 mm.
System must have a purge system capable of achieving an inert environment with at least 50 ppm O2.
System must achieve pump down time in no more than 30 minutes.
System must be capable of handling 5 powder feeders independently or more at a time.
Control software must be capable or controlling hoppers independently to mix materials during the print process.
System will have a footprint in X and Y of less than 1.5 m x 1.5 m respectively.
System will weigh less than 500 kg.
System Power: 220 V – Single Phase.
Timeline and Required Services:
Delivery timeframe less than 5 months.
Installation of the equipment will be performed by seller along with a site acceptance test to be determined by the seller.
Seller will supply any documentation on electrical certifications and electrical diagrams.
Seller will provide on-site training of the equipment.
Seller will supply option for service contract.
