About this file
This is a technical reference document for the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) Linear Referencing System (LRS), which establishes standardized coding and identification protocols for all road segments, bridges, projects, and assets within South Carolina. The document provides comprehensive coding specifications organized by county, route type, route number, route auxiliary designation, and direction. The LRS utilizes a 12-digit unique identifier (LRSKEY) structured as CCTTNNNNNAAD, where each component corresponds to specific geographic and functional classifications. Road segments are defined by county, route type, route number, route auxiliary, direction, and beginning and ending mile points, while point features are defined by county, route type, route number, route auxiliary, direction, and mile point. The system is managed through SCDOT's Roadway Information Management System (RIMS), which processes all route modifications including renumbering and route extensions. The document references a shape file of the state highway network (Statewide Highways.zip) available through SCDOT's GIS website for additional reference and review.
The document contains detailed lookup tables for all 46 South Carolina counties (numbered 01-46 from Abbeville to York), five primary route types prioritized from Interstate Routes (01) to Local Routes (09), and an extensive list of route auxiliary codes distinguishing between mainline routes, business routes, bypasses, ramps, spurs, connections, and specialized drives serving institutional and community facilities. Direction codes utilize cardinal directions (N, S, E, W) as defined by SCDOT standards, which may differ from actual vehicle travel direction at any given time. This standardized coding system enables consistent asset location identification and management across the state's transportation network for planning, design, construction, and maintenance activities.

SCDOT Linear Referencing System (LRS)
SCDOT utilizes a single LRS for location of all roads, bridges, projects, and assets. Road segments must be defined by County, Route Type, Route Number, Route Auxiliary, Direction, Beginning and Ending mile points. Point features must be defined by County, Route Type, Route Number, Route Auxiliary, Direction and Mile Point. SCDOT’s Roadway Information Management System (RIMS) is the owner of the LRS, and all route modifications (e.g., renumber a route, lengthen a route, etc…) are first performed in RIMS. Routes have a unique LRSKEY (12 digit identifier that includes the elements used in the LRS). A summary of the LRS key is defined below, and the LRS code details begin on the next page.
CCTTNNNNNAAD
CODE COMMENT FORMAT
CC County Number 01-46 TT Route Type 01,02,04,07,09 NNNNN Route Number 00001-99999 AA Route Auxiliary 00-99 D Direction N,S,E or W
• County numbers must correspond to the county names starting with Abbeville County
(01) and ending with York County (46).
• Route types must run from order of priority starting with Interstate Routes (01), to Local Routes (09).
• Route Auxiliaries must include Mainline Routes (00), Business Routes (07), etc…
• Direction must be the direction of the route as defined by SCDOT, not necessarily the direction the vehicle is travelling at the time. For example, I-26 is an East/West route although vehicles may physically be travelling North or South at certain times.
• SCDOT also has a shape file of the state highway network which may be beneficial for review. The file is called Statewide Highways.zip.
