About this file
This document is Attachment B4, a Technical Performance Metrics and Desired System Characteristics appendix for Topic 4 NextSTEP-3, which establishes technical requirements and verification methods for an advanced manufacturing payload system intended for deployment on the International Space Station or other orbital platforms.
The requirements span six primary categories: Functional Performance, Design, Logistics, Safety and Mission Assurance, Environmental, and Software. Functional Performance requirements (1.1.1 through 1.1.10) mandate that the payload achieve high-dimensional print accuracy, motion accuracy, support at least four material feedstocks including metals and polymers, produce part yields exceeding 80% for ten consecutive samples and 60% for twenty samples, include independent quality verification methods, complete test cases within NASA-specified timeframes, incorporate post-processing solutions if needed, and feature autonomous fault detection and recovery capabilities. The payload must produce full-sized operationally relevant parts without additional assembly except where multi-part fabrication is intentionally required for larger structures. Design requirements (1.2.1 through SPEC.1.2.4) require structural and environmental integrity meeting all intended lifecycle loads, chemical compatibility with feedstock and orbital platform systems, and installable design with specialized tools provided as necessary. Logistics specifications (SPEC.1.3.1 through SPEC.1.3.3) call for modular tool design enabling simple crew replacement, consumable replaceable within thirty minutes, and accessible fluid/electrical connectors for leak checks. Safety and Mission Assurance requirements mandate compliance with ISS safety protocols, Do-No-Harm criteria, and fire safety standards for manned vehicles. Environmental requirements specify 0 to 1 g operational capability and 30% oxygen environment functionality without ignition risk. Software requirements demand command acknowledgment and health/status telemetry, real-time fault annunciation, data logging and transmission capability, and compliance with applicable NASA Design and Construction standards per NPR 7123.1.
