About this file
This is an attachment to a federal contract (80JSC026Q0003) specifying required biospecimen and tissue collection and preservation procedures for NASA.
The document mandates collection and preservation of biospecimens identified in Table 1 upon animal sacrifice, unless reasonable justification is provided. All tissues required to achieve the contract's deliverables and specific aims remain the property of the Principal Investigator during the contract performance period, but tissues and associated metadata are considered sole property of NASA and cannot be shared or used without express written permission from an appropriate Government representative. NASA will collect all required samples and associated metadata according to the Performance Work Statement. Optional samples not listed in Table 1 may be collected and preserved but are not required for ingestion into the NASA Human Research Program Biospecimen and Tissue Sharing Collection (part of NBISC), and NASA assumes no responsibility for resources needed to collect auxiliary tissues.
Table 1 specifies required tissues from control and treatment groups (n=10 per group) with dual preservation methods. Tissues include colon, eyes, heart, kidneys, liver lobes, lungs, spleen, ovaries, hindlimbs, blood at sacrifice, and gross tumors. Preservation Method 1 typically employs snap freezing in liquid nitrogen, with exceptions for hindlimbs (paraformaldehyde into ethanol) and blood (snap freeze only). Preservation Method 2 primarily uses paraffin embedding, with hindlimbs specified as bone only (cleaned) into ethanol. Liver preservation requires snap freezing the left lobe and paraffin embedding the median lobe.

Required Sample Collection and Preservation for Biospecimen and Tissue Sharing
Collection and preservation (via the prescribed method(s)) of the biospecimens identified in Table 1 is required upon animal sacrifice unless reasonable justification is provided. Any tissues required to achieve the required deliverable and specific aims of the study shall remain with the Principal Investigator (PI) during the contract period of performance. These tissues and the associated metadata are considered the sole property of NASA and cannot be shared or used without express written permission from an appropriate Government representative.. All required samples and associated metadata will be collected by NASA according to the Performance Work Statement (PWS).
Any samples not listed in Table 1 can be collected and preserved but are not required to be ingested into the NASA HRP Biospecimen and Tissue Sharing Collection (BTSC, part of NBISC), and NASA is not responsible for resources needed to collect auxiliary tissues.
