About this file

This PowerPoint file (Attachment B) details the scan geometry specifications for a LiDAR evaluation at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) for wake turbulence research. The document provides precise technical requirements for LiDAR scanner positioning, including required and desirable scan geometries for crosswind scenarios from right to left and left to right. Key technical specifications include:

Specific scan geometry parameters include a spectral data collection area with a scan range of approximately 6,954.7 ft to 7,772.6 ft, a scanner height as low as practical (current height is 10 feet AGL), and a required revisit time of 10 seconds or less. The scan geometry accounts for runway centerline separation (750 ft nominal, 782.2 ft actual), wind direction, and precise measurement of airplane passage height. The accompanying federal contract opportunity is a solicitation by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Volpe Center and FAA Wake Turbulence Program Office to evaluate a new scanning pulsed LiDAR system through a side-by-side data collection campaign at the Volpe Site in Burlingame, California.

Scan Geometry for SFO LiDAR Evaluation Including Required Geometry and Desirable Geometry August 25, 2025 Attachment A

LiDAR Evaluation for Wake Turbulence Research

Notes Diagrams are approximately to scale, but scale changes based on crosswind direction (i.e. scale differs between slides 3 and 4) “Spectral data collection area” means the planar area in which the lidar is collecting raw spectral data during the wake scan. Post-processing software used to generate wake tracks must be able to track wakes as they move through the entire collection area Scans are approximately 16 degrees offset from perpendicular relative to runway orientation X (along beam) and Y (above scanner) axes referenced to center of lidar scanner Note: nominal centerline separation between SFO 28L and 28R is 750 ft (228.6 m), but separation along beam is ~782.2 ft (238.4 m) due to obliquity Revisit time should be ≤ 10 seconds (with lower revisit time preferred) Test lidar scanner height should be as low as practical given siting constraints; current WindTracer scanner height is approximately 10 feet AGL / 12 feet MSL, but test lidar can have a lower scanner height as long as the scan clears the fence
