About this file

These are installation instructions from RCP Shelters, Inc. for a Laminated Wood Hexagonal/Octagonal Pavilion with Wood Columns. The document provides a detailed 11-step process for installing the pavilion, beginning with laying out center lines, digging holes for concrete piers, and setting columns according to shop drawings and local area code requirements. The installation involves precise placement of columns, use of specialized hardware like hardened spikes or rebar, pouring concrete foundations, hoisting and connecting beams, installing decking with specific orientation, and applying fascia and waterproofing.

The instructions emphasize several key technical considerations, including using Loctite on threaded hardware, avoiding over-tightening bolts, not tightening connections until complete assembly, and allowing 48 hours for concrete to cure between steps. RCP Shelters recommends using a lift truck or small crane for beam placement, using nylon web slings (not chains), and covering decking with roofing felt as soon as possible. The document provides contact information (800-525-0207 or 772-288-3600) for questions, noting that installers should have project plans and a five-digit project number available when calling.

Read installation instructions thoroughly prior to assembly.

Bracing material may be required during assembly.

Installation should be done as soon as possible to reduce the effects of weathering. All wood parts received for this unit should be placed in a dry place, if field erection is not immediately performed.

Loctite should be used on all threaded hardware.

Do not over tighten bolts (if applicable).

Do not tighten any nuts, bolts, rods, etc. until the unit is completely assembled.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

STEP 1: Lay out center lines on selected site as shown on Floor Plan. Dig (augur) holes for concrete piers according to RCP shop drawings and area code requirements for this type of structure.

STEP 2: To place columns, set 2” x 6” securely nailed to stakes driven in the ground. The inside face of the boards should be the back edge of the columns. The bottoms should be at the desired finish floor elevation. Measuring from the top of the columns, place marks on the column for top of floor elevation.

STEP 3: Special hardened, annularly grooved spikes are now pounded into the columns (6 per column) as shown on drawings.

NOTE: Columns may be required to be field drilled for rebar (supplied by GC) in place of spikes.

STEP 4:

Place columns into the augured holes. The marks on the columns should align with the bottom edge of the 2” x 6”. Spike through the 2” x 6” into the column. Securely brace the tops of the columns back into the ground. Call RCP prior to setting columns if not 100% clear on their location.

STEP 5: Pour approximately ½ yard of concrete into each of the holes. Check location, plumbness, & elevation of the columns. Make necessary adjustments. If adjustments were necessary, puddle concrete to eliminate any voids. Allow concrete to cure for 48 hours before proceeding with installation.

STEP 6: A lift truck or small crane should be used to hoist beams in place, atop columns. Use nylon, well padded, web slings (do NOT use chains or cables). Position the B-1 beams so it aligns with the column.

Connect the beam to column as shown for CONN S-2. Connect the other end to the compression ring at CONN S-1. Set all beams in same manner. If applicable, connect purlins between B-1 beams. After all beams and purlins are attached, tighten all bolts.

STEP 7: Reference drawings for instructions for unloading, handling, and cutting of 2” x 8” decking. The cut drops shall be used on the shelter to minimize waste. Do not discard. Install deck in accordance with these instructions. The "V" Joint should be laid so it is visible from inside of shelter. Drive courses tight with blocking. Longer pieces may require come-along straps to pull tight. Attach each piece of deck to each support with nails. The decking should be covered with roofing felt as soon as bays are completed. If the installation cannot be completed in one day, the decking that has been installed should be covered before leaving the site.

STEP 8: If necessary, snap line and cut deck at the eave. Install fascia to the eaves and decking with finish nails (see nailing schedule). The fascia is not pre-cut; cutting and fitting shall be performed by installer on site. Fascia joints and corners should be mitered. Install 2x4 nailer per Eave Detail.

STEP 9: Check to be sure all nuts, bolts, etc. are “snug” tight,” and no nails protrude through wooden decking or fascia boards.

STEP 10: Apply waterproofing package (may not be supplied by RCP) per manufacturer’s specs and/or RCP drawings.

STEP 11: Form and pour the concrete pad per owner’s specifications. Allow 48 hours for concrete to set. This step may be done at same time as foundations are poured.

RCP recognizes that there are optional installation methods that may prove expedient for large projects, or experienced, well-equipped erectors.

Please call (772) 288-3600 for any questions or concerns. Please have plans available, and reference the five digit project number.
