About this file

This is a technical specifications document for the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Office of Aeronautics detailing foundation standards and installation requirements for Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS) installations at Michigan airport sites, including Gladwin Zettel Memorial Airport (GDW) and Paul C. Miller–Sparta Airport (8D4). The document provides comprehensive engineering plans and specifications for excavation, landscaping, grounding systems, and sensor layout configurations. It includes detailed CAD drawings showing excavation depths ranging from 2 to 5 feet, specifications for limestone geotextile materials, earth electrode systems with copper components, and precise placement of weather sensors including lightning sensors, wind towers, barometers, rain gauges, and visibility equipment. The installation specifications outline requirements for communication cables, power cables, counterpoise wires, and ground rods with specific depth, spacing, and separation requirements to ensure proper functionality and safety of the AWOS installations.

The foundation standards establish minimum installation depths of 24 inches below finished grade for communication and power cables, with lateral spacing requirements of at least 6 feet between different cable types except where necessary for duct bank entry. Ground rods must be spaced no more than 300 feet apart around the entire circuit, with 3-foot separation from duct or conduit ends, and the top of each rod must be at least 10 inches below finished grade. Backfilling procedures require specific layer depths and compaction standards, with concrete markers required at duct and conduit ends. Trenches must be a minimum of 24 inches deep and 6 inches wide, with conduit installations at a minimum of 36 inches below finished grade graded at 3 inches per 100 feet toward handholes and duct ends. The document establishes standards applicable to all Michigan AWOS sites, providing contractors with uniform technical requirements for concrete and electrical work at multiple airport locations.
