About this file
This document is an installation specifications guide for Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS) cable work across Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) sites. The specifications detail comprehensive requirements for communication and voice cable installation, power cable installation, counterpoise wire placement, ground rod spacing, trench construction, and conduit installation. Communication and voice cables must be installed at a minimum depth of 24 inches below finished grade with a minimum 6-foot spacing from power cables, while power cables require the same 24-inch depth with conductors spaced at least 3 inches apart. Counterpoise guard wires must maintain a minimum depth of 14 inches below finished grade and be positioned at least 10 inches above any cable. Ground rods are to be spaced no more than 300 feet apart around the entire circuit and positioned at least 3 feet from duct or conduit ends.
The specifications further establish detailed requirements for trench construction, backfilling procedures, and concrete marker placement and identification. Trenches must maintain a minimum depth of 24 inches below finished grade with a minimum 6-inch width and must be backfilled in layers—the first 4 inches loose and uncompacted, the second 4 inches tamped and compacted, and subsequent layers not exceeding 8 inches before compaction. Concrete markers, either 2 feet square by 4 inches thick or 24 inches in diameter by 4 inches thick, must be placed flush with ground at duct or conduit ends and marked with legible identification. Conduit must be installed at a minimum depth of 36 inches below finished grade with a grade of 3 inches per 100 feet toward handholes and must extend 5 feet beyond pavement edges.
