About this file

This is an analytical laboratory report prepared by Eurofins Eaton Analytical for San Francisco International Airport (SFO) documenting the comprehensive chemical analysis of biosolids samples collected on March 19, 2025, and received on March 20, 2025. The report presents the results of extensive testing performed on a solid biosolids matrix sample (SFOI-SludgeProfile) with a percent solids content of 32.3%. Testing was conducted across multiple analytical methods including volatile organic compounds (SW846 8260B), semivolatile organic compounds (SW846 8270C), gasoline and diesel range organics (SW846 8015B), organochlorine pesticides (SW846 8081B), polychlorinated biphenyls (SW846 8082), herbicides (SW846 8151A), metals analysis via inductively coupled plasma (SW846 6010B), and mercury analysis (SW846 7471B). The analyses were completed between March 20 and April 10, 2025, with sample preparation and analytical work performed across multiple preparation and analysis batches.

The report documents detected analytes and their concentrations in micrograms per kilogram or milligrams per kilogram, along with corresponding reporting limits and method detection limits. Notable detections include volatile compounds such as acetone (12,000 µg/Kg), carbon disulfide (3,000 µg/Kg), and various xylenes and trimethylbenzenes in the 100-300 µg/Kg range; diesel range organics ranging from 300 to 14,000 mg/Kg across carbon chain fractions (C13-C44); herbicides including 2,4-D (840 µg/Kg) and 2,4,5-TP (78 µg/Kg); metals including barium (592 mg/Kg), chromium (543 mg/Kg), zinc (550 mg/Kg), and copper (160 mg/Kg); and trace mercury (0.14 mg/Kg). Quality control procedures included method blanks, laboratory control samples, matrix spikes, and surrogate recovery analyses, with narrative notes documenting matrix interferences, dilutions, and instances where surrogate or quality control recoveries exceeded acceptable limits, particularly in the gasoline and diesel range organics and semivolatile analyses.

GC/MS Semi VOA Method 8270C: Surrogate recovery for the following sample was outside control limits: (570-223084-A-1-F MSD). Evidence of matrix interference is present; therefore, re-extraction and/or re-analysis was not performed.

Method 8270C: The continuing calibration verification (CCV) associated with batch 570-549108 recovered above the upper control limit for 4-Chloro-3-methylphenol. The samples associated with this CCV were non-detects for the affected analytes; therefore, the data have been reported. The associated samples are impacted: SFOI-SludgeProfile (380-141535-1) and (CCVIS 570-549108/2).

Method 8270C: The following sample was diluted due to the nature of the sample matrix: SFOI-SludgeProfile (380-141535-1).

Elevated reporting limits (RLs) are provided.

Method 8270C: The matrix spike / matrix spike duplicate (MS/MSD) recoveries for the following sample associated with preparation batch 570-547957 and analytical batch 570-548522 were outside control limits: (570-223084-A-1-E MS) and (570-223084-A-1-F MSD). The associated laboratory control sample (LCS) recovery met acceptance criteria.

Method 8270C: The following samples were diluted due to the nature of the sample matrix: (570-223084-A-1-G), (570-223084-A-1- E MS) and (570-223084-A-1-F MSD). Elevated reporting limits (RLs) are provided.

No additional analytical or quality issues were noted, other than those described above or in the Definitions/ Glossary page.

Gasoline Range Organics Method 8015B_GRO: Surrogate recovery for the following sample was outside control limits: SFOI-SludgeProfile (380-141535-1).

Evidence of matrix interference is present; therefore, re-extraction and/or re-analysis was not performed.

Method 8015B_GRO: The matrix spike (MS) recoveries for preparation batch 570-551593 and analytical batch 570-551511 were outside control limits. Non-homogeneity is suspected because the associated laboratory control sample (LCS) recovery was within acceptance limits.

No additional analytical or quality issues were noted, other than those described above or in the Definitions/ Glossary page.

Diesel Range Organics Method 8015B_DRO - Silica Gel Cleanup: Surrogate recovery for the following sample was outside control limits: SFOI- SludgeProfile (380-141535-1). Evidence of matrix interference is present; therefore, re-extraction and/or re-analysis was not performed.

Method 8015B_DRO - Silica Gel Cleanup: Due to the high concentration of C23-C44 and C13-C44, the matrix spike / matrix spike duplicate (MS/MSD) for preparation batch 570-549698 and 570-551160 and analytical batch 570-552861 could not be evaluated for accuracy and precision. The associated laboratory control sample (LCS) met acceptance criteria.

Herbicides No additional analytical or quality issues were noted, other than those described above or in the Definitions/ Glossary page.

PCBs Method 8082: The following sample required a mercury clean-up, via EPA Method 3660A, to reduce matrix interferences caused by sulfur: SFOI-SludgeProfile (380-141535-1). The reagent lot number used was: 5963588. EPA 8082.

No additional analytical or quality issues were noted, other than those described above or in the Definitions/ Glossary page.

Pesticides Method 8081B: The native sample, matrix spike, and matrix spike duplicate (MS/MSD) associated with preparation batch 570-547455 and analytical batch 570-548304 were performed at the same dilution. Due to the additional level of analyte present in the spiked samples, the concentration of 4,4'-DDT in the MS/MSD was above the instrument calibration range. The data have been reported and qualified.

No additional analytical or quality issues were noted, other than those described above or in the Definitions/ Glossary page.

Metals Method 6010B: The matrix spike / matrix spike duplicate (MS/MSD) recoveries and precision for preparation batch 570-556098 and analytical batch 570-556411 were outside control limits. Sample matrix interference and/or non-homogeneity are suspected because the associated laboratory control sample / laboratory sample control duplicate (LCS/LCSD) precision was within acceptance limits.

Method 6010B - STLC Citrate: The method blank for preparation batch 570-547904 and 570-548650 and analytical batch 570-549179 contained < Barium> above the method detection limit. This target analyte concentration was less than the reporting limit (RL) in the method blank; therefore, re-extraction and/or re-analysis of samples was not performed.

Method 7471B: The matrix spike / matrix spike duplicate (MS/MSD) recoveries for preparation batch 570-548822 and analytical batch 570-549239 were outside control limits for one or more analytes. See QC Sample Results for detail. Sample matrix interference and/or non-homogeneity are suspected because the associated laboratory control sample (LCS) recovery is within acceptance limits.

No additional analytical or quality issues were noted, other than those described above or in the Definitions/ Glossary page.

General Chemistry No additional analytical or quality issues were noted, other than those described above or in the Definitions/ Glossary page.
