About this file
This document is the Foundation Design for the Judicial Drive Trail Pedestrian Bridge project, prepared by GEO Design & Engineering, Inc. in collaboration with Professional Design Group, Inc. for the Public Works Department of the City of Fairfax, Virginia.
The project involves the construction of a 70-foot pedestrian bridge over Accotink Creek, as part of the Judicial Drive Trail Connection project. The bridge design includes concrete beams, caissons, and a concrete deck. Key details include the caisson bearing capacity of 5,000 psf, minimum caisson diameter of 36 inches, concrete compressive strengths of 5,000 psi for caissons and 6,000 psi for beams/abutments, and reinforcement requirements. The project has a 6% DBE goal and requires VDOT pre-qualification.

(VUSBC) .
2. Work performed shall comply with these general notes unless otherwise noted on plans.
3. Work performed shall comply with all applicable local and state codes, ordinance, and regulations.
4. On-site verification of all dimensions and conditions shall be the responsibility of the general contractor and his subcontractors.
5. Discrepancies: the contractor shall compare and coordinate all drawings; when, in the opinion of the contractor, a discrepancy exists he shall promptly report it to the Designer for proper adjustment before proceeding with the work.
6. Omissions: in the event certain features of the construction are not fully shown on drawings, their construction shall be the same character as conditions that are shown or noted.
7. All work is to be performed in a professional manner and in accordance with standard practice and shall be in strict compliance with manufacturer's specifications and/or recommendations.
8. Dimensions shall be read or calculated and never scaled. All dimensions are rough unless noted otherwise.
9. All dimensions shall be reviewed on structural drawings. AOR notified of any discrepancies and inconsistencies between disciplines.
10. The general and sub-contractors shall carefully examine the drawings inspect the size and acquaint themselves with all governing ordinances, laws, etc. and otherwise familiarize themselves with all matters which affect performance of the work.
11. The structural integrity of the caissons & beams/ abutments is dependent upon completion according to the plans and specifications. The structural engineer of the record assumes no liability for the structure during the construction. The method of construction and sequence of operations is the sole responsibility of the contractor. The contractor shall supply any necessary bracing, guys, etc. to properly brace the structure against wind, dead and live loads until the building is completed according to the plans specifications. Any questions regarding temporary bracing requirements should e forwarded to a structural engineer for review.
SOILS
1. The Caissons end bearing capacity shall be 5,000 psf. (GDE Report E23056)
2. Caisson bearing elevation shall be at 5 feet minimum below adjacent sanitary invert elevation, estimated at 369 feet at start of bridge (west side ) and 367 feet end of bridge (east side). All elevations tobe verified in the field.
DIVISION 2 - CONCRETE
1. Structural concrete shall be constructed in accordance with the requirements of IRC Chapter 19 and ACI 318 as amended in Section 1905 of this code. All concrete construction including, detailing, fabrication, placement of reinforcing, mixing, handling, placing, finishing, and curing shall conform to ACI "Structural Concrete for Building" (ACI 301), ACI
"Manual of Standard Practice for detailing Reinforced Concrete Structures" (ACI-315), and "ACI Building Code
Requirements for Reinforced Concrete" (ACI-318). All reinforcing shall conform to the CRSI Specifications Handbook.
Concrete placement shall meet all cold weather and hot weather requirements outline in ACI 306 & 305 respectively.
2. All Concrete shall conform to ASTM C94. Minimum compressive strength shall be as follows
- Caisson 5,000 psi
- Beam/ Abutment 6,000 psi
3. Maximum aggregate size for regular concrete shall be ¾' and peal-gravel concrete shall be 3/8". Aggregate for regular weight concrete shall conform to ASTM C33 and lightweight concrete shall conform ASTM C330.
4. Owner shall retain the services of a qualified testing agency to provide testing of concrete to include compressive strength, temperature, slump and air entrainment.
5. Contractor shall provide concrete mix design data for each type and strength of concrete shown in the structural drawings. The mix design data should include: concrete strength, slump, air entrainment, proposed aggregates, admixtures, and laboratory test data.
6. Concrete placement should be monitored by GDE personnel or another third party inspection agency. Concrete shall be tested for slump, temperature and air entrainment
7. Concrete cylinders should be fabricated for caissons and beams for laboratory curing and testing for compressove strength at 7 and 28 days
8. The caissons should have a minimum diameter of 36 inches
9. Casing would be needed to prevent the collapse of the sides into the caisson hole
10. Drainage measures should be provided during caisson drilling and construction.
11. Concrete for the caissons
Reinforcement Steelp
